Bottom post of the previous page:

Nothing to do with this years Le Mans series but Toyota Gazoo Racing has confirmed that Brendon Hartley will slot into Fernando Alonso’s seat for the 2019/20 World Endurance Championship season. Hartley’s first race will be at Silverstone at the start of the 2019/20 season, where he will co-drive with Sebastien Buemi and Kamui Kobayashi.

Alonso had already announced that he will not continue to compete in the World Endurance Championship next season.

Having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year, he’s already checked off the specific ambition he had when entering the competition. Of course he hopes to complete the WEC Championship win this year to add to his WDC title tally from F1

Instead, the Spaniard has been linked to outings with Toyota in the World Rally Championship.

Of course he also tested a Dakar spec Toyota Hilux earlier this year, sparking suggestions he could compete in that event next year.

Interesting video of stills showing all the Le Mans 24hr winners from 1923 right through to last years winner. Shows the evolution of the cars through the years.

Shame for it to have not even started a timed lap. A lot of money spent for nothing

Toyota #7 clinches Le Mans pole; Aston Martin head GTE
oyota Gazoo Racing’s #7 car clinched pole position for the 24 Hours of Le Mans while Aston Martin prevailed in a tightly contested GTE-Pro field.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and José María López proved fastest as lap times tumbled on the final day of Qualifying by almost two seconds in LMP1.

Kobayashi’s pole time, a 3:15.497s was set in Qualifying 2 on Thursday afternoon (local time), while a heavily interrupted Qualifying 3 in the evening saw no major changes outright.

It came after the team had to replace the monocoque on the #7 Toyota after Wednesday’s qualifying shunt.

The #8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid of Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima qualified four tenths behind from its sister car, while SMP Racing’s #17 entry was the first of the non-hybrids in third, a further two tenths back.

Qualifying 3’s interruptions meant that the #8 Toyota had limited opportunity to pip the sister car from the top; Nakajima starting a flying lap in the ‘happy hour’ period just as a red flag came out for debris.

Numerous slow zone interventions broke up the on-track rhythm for the remainder of the two-hour session, despite a late effort from Buemi in the #8 who was ultimately not able to improve.

Pole position in LMP2 went the way of Graff’s #39 Oreca driven by Vincent Capillaire, Jonathan Hirschi and Tristan Gommendy.

GTE-Pro was hotly contested as the #95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage of Marco Sørensen, Nicki Thiim and Darren Turner emerged on top in class in 29th outright with a lap time of 3:48.000s early in Qualifying 3.

Five different manufacturers graced the top five in GTE-Pro, the #67 Ford GT in second, Corvette Racing’s #63 C7.R in third after a late lap from Antonio García, followed by the #93 Porsche of Earl Bamber and the #82 BMW M8 GTE.

Ryan Briscoe’s #69 Ford GT ended the session 10th in class, 38th outright.

Leading the GTE-Am pack was the #88 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche of Satoshi Hoshino, Giogio Roda, and Matteo Cairoli in 45th outright.

They bettered the sister #77 car of Matt Campbell, Julien Andlauer and Christian Ried by two tenths.

Qualifying 2 was red-flagged for 25 minutes after Thomas Laurent stopped on track prior to Mulsanne Corner, due to an engine failure on his #3 Rebellion.

Meanwhile, the #1 Rebellion also suffered an engine failure in Qualifying 3 stopping before Arnage.

Notably, the 62-car field has been reduced by one, with the #99 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche withdrawn due to driver Tracy Krohn not being cleared to race following a heavy shunt in Free Practice.

Yeah although they say it is only on one lap pace and race pace will be a few seconds per lap slower. They (SMP) said they want to lead the Toyota’s on lap 1 for the glory. So lap 1 should be a don’t miss event

Side note: Philip Eng will pay tribute to Roland Ratzenberger by using a helmet with the livery of Roland's.

I've always loved RR's helmet design. Beautifully minimalist.

Conway will be "extra-careful" after suspended penalty for the Practice accident he was involved in.

I must admit I thought the contact at the time was the fault of the Dragonspeed LMP2 car but it seems the stewards thought otherwise, guilty of slowing insufficiently for a double waved yellow being shown.
Toyota LMP1 driver Mike Conway admits he will have to take extra precautions after being hit with a suspended three-minute penalty for the Le Mans 24 Hours.
In Wednesday night's first qualifying session, Conway collected the DragonSpeed LMP2 Oreca of Roberto Gonzalez, who had spun in the Ford chicane. Gonzalez started to move over to the racing line as Conway went past in the #7 TS050 Hybrid, triggering nose-to-nose contact.

Despite initial suggestions that Gonzalez was to blame due to his manoeuvre, the stewards handed Conway a suspended three-minute stop-and-hold penalty for failing to slow down sufficiently for the double-waved yellow flags at the chicane.

The penalty will force Conway to take extra precautions. "I just have to be extra-careful, otherwise I’ll take a three-minute penalty and then you’re a lap [down] at that point,” he told Motorsport.com.

"You always have to be careful anyway in terms of the slow zones, full course yellows, yellow flags. Especially in the night they are quite bright and you can get a glare.”
