Waters sweeps Sunday poles at Symmons Plains

Cameron Waters has qualified on pole for both Races 7 and 8 of the Repco Supercars Championship at the Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint. Both sessions were run on a group A & B format.... tbh Im not sure how they sort who is in group A and Group B, but the idea is to split the number of cars on track at any one time, a format used on shorter lap time tracks to minimise traffic of those on slowdown laps and flyers.

Cam is due to share the front row with Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Jamie Whincup for Race 7, and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert at the start of Race 8.

Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen, who was in the A group, put the #97 Triple Eight entry sixth on the grid for the day’s first 44-lapper and seventh for the latter.

I suspect SVG has compromised qualifying to ensure he has decent rubber for the races with as mentioned a strict 16 tyre for the weekend limit for 3 races and 3x qualy sessions..

Well they got as far as the hairpin when Le Broq got into de Pasquale.... they both rotated and it got a bit messy. But all survived and no SC. Le Broq got a penalty coming I think

SVG passes Brown for 3rd. Now he has to try and close the 2 seconds up the rod Whincup and Waters. Whincup is right on Waters tail, literally

Smith has been off track and is in the garage now.

Waters pits from the lead leaving Whincup in the lead with SVG behind him. Will RBR react and bring one of JW or SVG in

Well RBR did not react but now on lap 20/44 Whincup is in pitlane. Rejoins behind Waters but has fresher tyres by 5 laps or so. SVG still out on track in the led.

JW takes the lead from Waters and now SVG pits. Will he rejoin in front of Whincup?

No he doesnt... he rejoins behind Waters and Davison. He will struggle to pass both them and Whincup who is clear in front now.

SVG takes Waters next lap at the hairpin but couldnt stop, but turned in late with Waters stuck on his outside. That cost Waters 3rd place as Davison went pat in the delay.

SVG is now after Whincup a couple of seconds up the road. 10 laps to go for SVG to catch and pass Whincup and keep his unbeaten record going.

Race has become a bit meh... the main interest is will SVG catch and pass Whincup for the win. Gap is down to just over a second but only 4 to go.
I cant see it happening.

I suppose SVG chasing T8 teammate actually makes the pass less likely?

Will Brown on course for Top 5? That looks like a mild upset.

Is this Wes McDougall related to Dugal McDougall of years gone by?

Funny you should mention someone as obscure as Dugal McDougal..... many moons ago he worked in the pub we used to have our car meetings in and I got to know him, seeing him at races when he raced in Formula Ford, before he made it into V8SC temporarily with a Larry Perkins prepared car. I vaguely remember that after his first race Larry asked Dugal if they could borrow his car for the next round of the championship, which Dugal was not running in. Dugal agreed, and Russell Ingall totalled the car so Dugal ended up with a newer car to replace it.

Dugal also had a huge crash at Phillip Island in the rain which I remember the late Barry Sheene made one of his he 'has turned the car into a sausage' comments. The video became part of the intro to one of our Sport TV programs.

Also interesting is the way Dugal got into Motor Racing. Back in the early nineties he went to Adelaide for the GP with his Dad in their Mercedes road car. Phil Ward (who later started the Aussie Racing Cars category) was racing his Mercedes in the TC race supporting the GP. His alternator packed up. Somehow he ended up borrowing the alternator from the McDougal family car. After the racing the alternator was refitted to the road car and they set off back to Melbourne.

The alternator failed half way home leaving them stranded. To make up for the inconvenience Phil, who at the time ran a Go Kart racing business, offered Dugall a free drive day at his kart centre. Dugal got the racing bug and started racing Karts. He did well in karts and designed his own chassis.....and made a few quid flogging them to others. He moved on to FF. And then V8SC. He family had an Aloe Vera drink business which used to appear on his cars. There was a link with Pepsi but I know they didnt pay much and V8's were too expensive to run.

I know that Dugal now drives excavators for a living playing with diesels and anything to do with digging.

As for Wes McDougal I dont know if they are related.... all I know is Wes has been involved as an engineer in V8 and other categories for many (20+) years. He went to live in the UK working for Lister on the LM cars before coming back to Aus and working for Stone Brothers in the Ambrose days. He was still with them when it became Erebus, He left them and was at Matt STone Racing before joining T888 this year. He is the right sort of age for him to be a brother or cousin, but I have never read anything of them being linked. I do know that he went to a Melbourne University and first worked for Borland Racing Developments, a Melbourne company, so he was a Victorian based guy as was Dugal.

Edit:

I just found this video ..... The PI crash mentioned features on this compilation video at just before 1:30 in. Mainly shows aftermath.
