Bottom post of the previous page:

I think there's still a spot open at Team Sydney but I think he probably won't have the funding for that.

It seems like Holdsworth is probably out too since Tickford only has 3 RECs now as 23Red sold theirs to Tim Blanchard, and he doesn't bring as much funding as Courtney or Le Brocq. Apparently Tickford wanted to obtain a 4th REC but the other teams vetoed it and it was probably for Tom Randle anyway.

Scotty Mac likely to miss Bathurst due to calendar change.

As we know Scott is scheduled to run at the 1000 for DJR, but these plans are now in jeopardy due to a date change on the Indycar calendar.

The date change for the Long Beach Indycar finale has moved that event to 26th September, and that will leave ScottyMac unable to compete at Bathurst on the weekend of 7th Oct. The current 14 day quarantine rulings in place will leave Scott still serving quarantine as the lead up got under way.

Of course it is not a fait accompli at this stage, and hopefully by that time of year the quarantine restrictions on foreigners and returning residents/citizens entering Australia might have been relaxed, or a vaccine will be in place allowing less strict quarantine.

That of course is out of anyones hands bar the government at this stage.

David Reynolds has today outlined some of the details regarding his split with Erebus. Nothing but praise for the team but he said that certain aspects this year had clouded things and it was best for both sides to split. He did not and says he wont go into the details as he wants to move on rather than go into details.

One thing he did say though, was that until the split was made official yesterday he was contractually not allowed to enter into any negotiations with any other team so at present has kept to that and not discussed opportunities. As we know there is in effect one seat left.... that of Rick Kelly at Kelly Racing. But as of now he is not contractually tied to anyone so I am sure he has been in touch with Kelly Racing.

One of the rumours going around was that Penrite , the Erebus naming sponsor, and who were very close to David, who is their ambassador, have been rumoured to be quitting Erebus as well..... interestingly when Kostecki was confirmed to be taking David's place at Erebus, in all the publicity photos showed Kostecki in a black Erebus shirt..... devoid of any Penrite branding. Coincidence, or a hint of Penrite out?

More on the future direction of Erebus, Reynolds etc,.....

Penrite confirms departure from Erebus

As has been suspected might happen from as soon as trouble with Reynolds at Erebus was hinted Penrite have today confirmed they have dropped the sponsorship of the team completely, having started as a single car backer back in the Erebus Mercedes days to the full two car naming rights package of last years 2 Commodores.

Nothing confirmed as to their future plans but I suspect they will be similar to the direction that Reynolds is heading of which nothing is confirmed. In reality it can only be to replace Rick Kelly who has retired from racing.

All Penrite are currently saying is “Penrite Oil Australia will be making further announcements related to its exciting 2021 motorsport marketing program shortly.”

Lee Holdsworth is out of the series as Tickford has effectively lost a car due to REC movements. A shame given he'd had a resurgence in recent years and he seems like one of the more likeable people in the series. This only leaves Rick Kelly's old car (almost certainly going to be Reynolds' new car) and the second Team Sydney car to be confirmed.

Predictably Holdsworth has landed a gig in Aussie TCR...

Holdsworth and Jay Hanson will race Giulietta Veloces out of Ashley Seward Motorsport, which fielded Dylan O’Keeffe to fourth in the 2019 campaign.

TCR Australia’s 2021 season is currently set to kick off with Race Tasmania, which will see the touring car category hold a points-paying round at Symmons Plains and an Invitational affair at Baskerville Raceway.

While there exists some doubt over those events due to border restrictions, it is understood that plans are afoot for New South Wales-based team members, including from the S5000 and Touring Car Masters ranks, to enter a travel bubble and avoid quarantine obligations. It has today become more complicated with Tasmania having added the Brisbane Metro area to the Covid hotspot list.

There is also an outside chance that Winton could be used instead, although only if the Tasmanian arrangements, which are being formulated in consultation with the state government, do not come to fruition.

The Symmons Plains round is slated for January 24-26.

Supercars AGP weekend moved to Sandown

In light of the postponement of the AGP until November, Supercars, who had been on the support card for the GP will now have that race weekend on the same dates but at Sandown Park.

Supercars has confirmed it will head to Sandown over the March 20-21 weekend but could still appear at Albert Park later in the year in support of F1.

What will happen with Supercars at the revised AGP weekend in November? Will they race an additional meeting there to take their usual AGP support? As things stand it does not seem likely as two weekends prior (7th Nov) Supercars are racing in New Zealand. Difficult to get all the cars from NZ to Albert Park in that timeframe given freight is by sea and not airfreight . So maybe an AGP with no Supercars support. It has happened before and in fact the GP was slightly larger without Supercars IIRC.

Supercars are taking a wait and see approach, not discounting it happening.

Apparently no formal approach has been made by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to Supercars as yet, but the addition of the event is viewed as a potential safety net of sorts in the same way Sandown has been utilised.

Also scheduled to appear at the grand prix were S5000, Touring Car Masters, and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia. Maybe a good chance for TCR to step up to the plate

Supercars statement.
“We are delighted to confirm we will return to Sandown in 2021,” Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said.

“Few circuits demonstrate our history better than Sandown.

“With regards to the grand prix, we will assess the opportunity closer to the time.

“Right now our focus is on the pre-season and first few rounds of the upcoming 2021 Supercars season.

“We’d like to extend our thanks to the Victorian Racing Club for their support and flexibility.”

Ahead of the 2021 calendar being announced, Seamer had stated that Supercars would not compete in exhibition races.

The revised Australian Grand Prix weekend of November 18-21 would see the event fall between Supercars’ appearances in New Zealand (November 6-7) and Gold Coast (December 3-5).

Cars are set to traverse the Tasman by sea, with freight landing in Melbourne on the return voyage.

Lacroix to stay at DJR

Dick Johnson Racing’s technical guru, Ludo Lacroix, has been confirmed as staying on in 2021. Great news for the team as he is the technical guy behind the entire operation, and is widely respected as being the best tech guy in Aus. He was certainly considered a key part of the Team and Scott's success since he moved from T888 when DJR combined with Penske.

One of his key functions in 2021 will be designing and sorting the homologation of the Gen 3 Ford Mustang, with Gen 3 to be introduced for 2022. DJR remains Ford’s homologation team, meaning it, and therefore Lacroix, is charged with developing the Gen3 Mustang alongside Ford Performance.
Just a bit more re Ludo's role in the new look DJR setup. He will continue his TD/competition Director role with responsibility as above on the Gen 3 development, but will also be taking over the role of Race Engineer on the De Pasquale car. Ludo originally joined DJRTP with responsibility and race engineer role on Scotty Macs #17 car, a role he relinquished to take on other responsibilities within the team. So he reverts to a direct responsibility to the #18 De Pasquale car, whilst McLaughlin’s 2020 engineer Richard Harris will stay on the #17 Mustang, now working with Will Davison. Coulthards engineer on the #18 last year has moved to another role within the team including working with Ludo on Gen 3 development.

Nothing confirmed yet by Kelly Racing, but it has long been rumoured to be happening. And Reynolds is too good to be out of work.

If you believe what they say confirmation any day.

OK, well there is news from Kelly Racing, but not the news I was expecting. (ie Reynolds being confirmed. )

Instead we get, out of the blue....

New ownership and name for Kelly Racing
Kelly Racing will take on new ownership and an altered name for the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship after the Grove Group bought into the Ford squad as a major shareholder.

The team, which has competed in Supercars since 2009, will operate under the Kelly Grove Racing banner.

Grove Group executive chairman Stephen Grove and his son Brenton will attend all events alongside team principal and co-owner Todd Kelly.

Retired driver Rick Kelly remains a shareholder of the business.

Todd Kelly welcomed the new Kelly Grove Racing era and explained the need for a partner to join forces with.

“This will be our 13th year owning and running Kelly Racing,” he said.

“Over that period we’ve built and ran Holdens, designed, developed and manufactured a complete Nissan Supercar and engine, and recently converted to Ford, once again with the car build and engine development and manufacturing all completed in-house.

“I believe we’ve been extremely effective over the years to be able to design and manufacture all of our own equipment to an extremely high standard through having a great team, a supportive partner network and through a lot of hard work and dedication.

“But it’s been evident for a long time now that there are two factors that contribute to consistent on-track success; one, streamlining the team from four cars to two and the second is being able to find a way to compete with the top teams that have the firepower of multiple shareholders both locally and international.”

“To put ourselves on a level playing field it was extremely important to have a partner come into the team who is like-minded and as passionate about racing as we are, and fortunately we’ve been able to find that partner in Stephen Grove.

“The Grove Group, like most of our partners, is an extremely successful Australian-owned business which uses almost entirely Australian-made products which is important to Rick and myself.

“The Grove Group also has a vast amount of experience in motorsport with their Porsche and GT programs which will be a huge asset to the team.

“Along with an announcement in the coming days on our new driver and sponsor line-up for this year, I believe this new partnership will set us up for our most successful year yet.”

With Andre Heimgartner already confirmed to stay on with the squad for a fourth season, 2017 Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds is widely rumoured to be announced as his teammate.

Stephen Grove declared his excitement at the new venture, identifying Kelly Racing as the “right fit for our business given the synergies in philosophy between Kelly Racing and the Grove Group”.

Ford Australia and New Zealand boss Andrew Birkic added: “This is exciting news and will build on the strong and respected motorsport foundation that Kelly Racing have built up over the past 13 years to take the team to the next level.

“We look forward to continuing our support for the team and welcome Stephen and Brenton to the fold, and look forward to Kelly Grove Racing building on their on-track success this year.”

The Grove Group is a portfolio of businesses operating across the manufacturing, hire, private investment, property development and hospitality industries.

Both Stephen and Brenton Grove have lengthy racing backgrounds, particularly in the Porsche and GT spheres.

Kelly Grove Racing unveils Reynolds signing

As predicted a month or so ago, David Reynolds’ move to Kelly Grove Racing in 2021 has been made official after a multi-year deal with the Ford team was confirmed. Penrite, who last week confirmed they were also leaving Erebus have also been confirmed as the primary sponsor of the car, so David and Penrite will replace both Rick Kelly and Castrol, Kelly announcing his retirement back in October.

Image
Reynolds’ future is now set in stone by way of a return to both the Kelly squad and the Ford brand itself.

David spent one season at the Kellys in 2011 before controversially departing to take up an opportunity with Tickford, or Ford Performance Racing as it was then known.

David's long time engineer at Erebus Alistair McVein, having confirmed a move from Erebus to Kelly Racing late last year will naturally be continuing to engineer David's car.

So that leaves just one seat, that of the second Team Sydney car, alongside the ex DJRTP Fabian Coulthard, to be confirmed now. Alex Davison who drove for the team last year, and 2016 Dunlop Super2 Series winner Garry Jacobson among others linked to the role.

Nice about Reynolds. Can he finally do good over an entire year, or will be labelled as a Bathurst specialist in the future? He's great there, but he needs to be great everywhere.

(when he drove 700km but passed out while leading with just a few laps to go the other year is one of my favourite racing moments in recent years. Heroic.)

Yeah David has always been one of my favourites in the Supercars field.... always gives his all, and I guess I just like seeing a bit of a larrikin on the grid, someone who is always likely to do or say something 'unusual'.

Good luck to him

Sadly Erebus I think will be looking at a lean year, given their loss of Reynolds, De Pasquale, many engineering staff plus of course their primary backing from Penrite. A lot of what was the team gone and pretty much a fresh start. I feel sorry for Betty Klimenko team owner and Matriarch, as she is another one of the Supercars characters.

So good luck also to Erebus. I do believe though that Kostecki and Brown are both handy for "full time rookies". (Both have done co-driver roles in Supercars main tier, but neither have done a full time gig before)
