V8 SC 2010.

Well it all gets under way this weekend with this year not starting as usual with the Clipsal, but instead a 2 round Middle Easter wankfest, still part of the Championship, but with this weekend at the Abu Dhabi GP track (albeit not the same one as the F1 guys used, this one taking a shortcut after the pits and joining the main straight. That is followed the weekend after with Round 2 at Bahrain.

Here is the Abu Dhabi track layout they are using.

Image

They will be using the full Bahrain GP track. (actually I am assuming they are using the revised F1 track..... dont know for sure.

Anyway here is the calendar

* Denotes provisional
# Denotes Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series

I have marked Wanneroo as provisional.... the likelihood of it going ahead is remote as Tony Cockbreath has done a Bernie and said only if they throw a few million at the facilities.... but wont offer any ongoing guarantees for the event.

He would rather take a domestic championship to some remote and disinterested part of the world for half a dozen wealthy Arabs that necessitates thousands of Australians getting up in the middle of the night to watch it.

The cars look god but my interest has gone since many of the races last year were so boring. I will say hi again when they come to Adelaide. The middle eastern tracks suck.

Enduro Driver pairings already being firmed up

Despite the fact the season has not yet even started, and the enduro races are not until the back end of the year the teams are starting to get their enduro pairings sorted out....

Mainly because in their infinite wiscom, the V8 Supercar Board has passed the rule that will prohibit full-time drivers from pairing up at the endurance races – the L&H 500 at Phillip Island and the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

The rule will restrict regular Championship Series drivers from being paired in the same car for the two-driver races. ie No Whincup / Lowndes pairing allowed for instance, or Garth Tander and Will Davison, those two combos winning the last three Bathurst 1000 races..

At Bathurst this year, nine entries featured two regular drivers, with five of them finishing in the top eight – including the top three podium finishers Garth Tander/Will Davison first, Jason Richards/Cameron McConville second and Lee Holdsworth/Michael Caruso third.

I don't understand why teams should be effectively punished for having two strong drivers in one car together. More to the point, especially as it's a championship round, if the weaker say part time driver was to kill a top drivers year long championship charge .......

The last time a part-time driver won the Bathurst 1000 was in 2002 when Jim Richards paired up with then Holden Racing Team driver Mark Skaife.

Already confirmed in the way of Enduro driver pairings are:

Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes in the #888 Commodore VE in 2010 .
Steve Owen is set to team with V8 Champ Jamie Whincup in the #1 Vodafone 888 car.

David Besnard and Greg Ritter will partner primary GRM drivers Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso.

Its a load of bollocks and most of the teams think so too. :annoyed:

Pink to be the face of V8SC in 2010

Tony Cochrane has paid out some big $$$ to secure Pink as the face of V8SC for the next 3 years. I dread to think what market he is trying to attract to V8 racing!

They have released their new 2010 V8SC promo featuring Pink and many of the V8SC drivers, the cost of the add is rumoured to be between $2 and $5 million, big bucks for an add.

Either I've completely lost touch with what the series is about or Cochrane has. What an embarrassment.

Its not you Hammy, blame it on Cockbreath.

It seems he is happy to sacrifice the true V8 fans for the fad in and out in a flash crowd that go to watch a band with some cars if they get there earlier than they meant rather than a race meeting with a band after.

It seems the V8 organisers have turned Abu Dhabi into a circus by placing tyre bundles all over the place. The drivers dont like it. (They have had a few practice sessions now, and the meeting is underway....

Stone Brothers Racing driver Alex Davison described tyre bundles as a pet hate and lambasted a decision to place them on the Yas Marina track.
Alex Davison wrote: "I think it's an A1 first-class facility, the best place to go racing at in the world; the track's a lot of fun as well," he said.

"It's a pity the Australian officials think they know better than everyone else and put tyre bundles all over the circuit because they're a disgrace and really, it's a beautiful circuit and they ruin it completely by sticking tyre bundles everywhere because it removes the whole flow of the circuit.

"They are completely unnecessary because they are designed to stop dirt getting on to the track and obviously that's not an issue here at all."

Davison also said that drivers could not gain an advantage if they crossed over the kerbs.

"As soon as your outside tyres touch the kerb the car jumps wide and you lose time," he explained.

"So basically all they do is slow the cars down and make it more awkward for us to drive, it really ruins the flow of the track and it ruins the spectacle as well because the cars don't look nearly as good when they're having to steer around big tyre bundles instead of being able to jump the kerbs and go a little bit quicker through those chicanes."

Davison disagreed that drivers would travel too fast into the next corner if the tyre bundles were removed.

"It's completely irrelevant because the track's designed without tyre bundles; we can't use any more kerb than a Formula One can," he said.

"Sure, we'll be going slightly quicker entering some of the corners if the tyre bundles aren't there but we go around corners at 300kph; we have corners we go around at 60kph and you just brake accordingly.

"We might have to brake slightly earlier for the next corner if they remove the tyre bundles but really it's irrelevant."

Davison stressed his concern laid with the tyre bundles and not the Yas Marina Circuit.

"It's very frustrating to have a beautiful circuit and they ruin it completely by putting these tyre bundles on it," he said.

"It also detracts from the racing because it makes it much harder to overtake another car when those tyre bundles are there because when you are right behind another car you're blinded and you can't see those tyre bundles so it makes it very difficult to judge how close to go... I'm very disappointed they have done it."
Tim Schenken (CAMS) said the tyre bundles were a necessary evil.
"We have the same situation here as we have at Albert Park and Bahrain, for example, because the circuit's designed for Formula One," he explained.

"Formula One has low kerbs that are only 50mm high. A 50mm kerb in a Formula One kerb is effective; for a V8 Supercar it's just a slight bump on the track.

"So if you didn't have them there the drivers quite naturally would overuse the kerb because clearly the fastest way around a corner is straightening out the corner as much as possible."

Schenken said debris would definitely be brought on to the track without the tyre bundles.

"There are some parts where you have got grass behind the kerb so there's a risk the cars are going to overuse that and bring dirt on to the track and there's some corners here that actually have a gravel section behind them as part of the drainage system so you're going to have gravel on the track," he said.

"In some parts of the circuit you've got asphalt behind the kerbs so I think there would be a tendency to drive straight across there and there may be some parts of the circuit where you could just drive straight across and hardly turn the wheel at all so I'm not sure that would work (without tyre bundles)."

Schenken also pointed out that the safety installations at the Yas Marina Circuit are designed for the racing line.

"We hate them (tyre bundles) as well. You've got a fantastic circuit like this, it's unfortunate we have to put them out but at this time we don't have any deterrent to keep the cars on the track."
On the other hand Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup were both in favour of the tyre bundles,

Jason Bargwanna was 'sitting on the fence' and believes the tyre bundles are a non-issue.
"We've been racing with tyre bundles for the last 400 years so whether it's going to be there or not, it is what it is; just get on with it," he said.

"The problem is if we take it away we'll all start taking the piss out of the track, we'll use more than we need hence the reason why they do it.

"If there was concrete walls there no one would complain because they'd miss them too so it's all part of the racing."

Whincup on Abu Dhabi race one pole

So what has changed, other than a Hog badge being switched for a Lion? Nuffink, it would seem.

Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup took pole position for race one, in his Holden debut at the Yas V8 400 at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.

Whincup was fastest in qualifying and went even faster in the shootout to take pole position by nearly quarter of a second in his return to the Holden marque, with Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander alongside him after setting the second fastest time in both sessions.

Fords fans can be reasonably happy though, as the blue oval filled the second row, F P Rs Mark Winterbottom just ahead of the Jim Beam DJR Ford of James Courtney. Tander's team-mate Will Davison was fifth fastest, ahead of Jason Bright in the Trading Post (Brad Jones)Holden.

Lee Holdsworth, Stone Brothers team-mates Alex Davison and Shane van Gisbergen fill the next three places, with Whincup's team-mate Craig Lowndes completing the top-ten after spinning late in his shootout lap  Without the spin he was looking likely to set a time around that of Winterbottom's, so the Holdenfone Team are looking strong already!

Just outside the top ten are Paul Dumbrell in another FPR car, just ahead of Holdsworth's team-mate Michael Caruso and the Supercheap car of Russell Ingall.

The two Kellys, Rick and Todd, had a disappointing session, qualifying 17th and 21st, as did FPR's Steven Richards in 23rd and Paul Morris in 27th, filling in for Top Gear NZ's Greg Murphy.

So Holden take the top 10 by 6-4.

Pos Driver Car Time
1. Jamie Whincup Holden Commodore VE 1:58.1140
2. Garth Tander Holden Commodore VE 1:58.3550 + 0.2410

For god's sake, don't read this unless you know the results!
As it turned out, Tander's car had problems and was forced to start from the back of the grid, so Winterbottom was on row 1. Winterbottom got the jump but he was left of his start box, so he recieved a ten second penalty at the first pit stop. Meanwhile, Tander and Will Davidson both struck trouble, with Tander's car being damaged and losing 6 laps as a result, while Davison's engine blew on lap 29. In the end, Whincup and Lowndes finished 1-2, with either Courtney or Winterbottom finishing 3rd.
