World Superbike and Supports 2019

Season starts this weekend at Phillip Island.

Yes it crept up on me and I only realised it when looking through the TV Guide just now.

In fact Race 1 is on in an hour or so. (3.00pm local time) We have just had WSBK and WSSP pole sessions.

Video preview of the weekend: http://www.worldsbk.com/en/videos/2019/ ... est_videos
The World Superbike Championship revs up again this weekend for the start of the 2019 season at Phillip Island, and it could be a momentous year for the sport.
The thing I am looking forward to most is the man who has dominated the sport for the last half a decade – Jonathan Rea – and if he can continue to do so against some new threats.

Rea starts out to defend his fourth consecutive WSBK championship at The Island this weekend and while most people would say the pressure is on him as the favourite, I actually think the pressure rests mainly on the shoulders of the rest of the field, the riders attempting to stop him from steamrolling them on his Kawasaki once again and claiming a fifth title in a row.

He is on a red-hot winning streak, having won the last 11 races of last season but was knocked down to fourth during the official tests last week at Phillip Island.

Rea had a slow start by his standards last year, finishing fifth and second at The Island to double winner Marco Melandri, yet went onto dominate the championship thereafter.

He did have a small crash on Turn 10 on Monday morning and I have started to notice some cracks appearing but we will have to wait until Saturday and Sunday’s first races of the season to find out for sure. No doubt they will be thrillers.

The man who topped those tests at Phillip Island this year, and broke Melandri’s race-lap record from Race 2 last year in the process, is ex-MotoGP rider Alvaro Bautista on his all-new Ducati Panigale V4 R, and in my opinion Rea’s biggest challenge this year.

Catch coverage of the WSBK championship at Phillip Island LIVE with no ad-breaks during racing. Get it all on Foxtel

Bautista filled in for the injured Jorge Lorenzo at last year’s Phillip Island MotoGP on a factory Ducati and put in a stellar showing, finishing fourth, just four second behind winner Marc Marquez. Many people think Alvaro was hard done by not to keep riding in MotoGP but I believe their loss is our gain as he will be a huge draw this year.

Bautista is new to WSBKs and therefore will take some time to get accustomed to the changes, such as switching to Pirelli tyres from Michelin in MotoGP, to steel brakes from carbon fibre and learning some unfamiliar circuits.

He will also be adjusting to a completely different race weekend format of qualifying at lunchtime Saturday, a 22-lap Race 1 a 3pm and then Sunday at midday 10-lap Superpole race from which the first nine form the Race 2 grid at 3pm.

He will be an unknown quantity however, with not only being new to the sport himself but also riding the brand new Panigale Ducati, of which they have very little previous relevant data to go on. They have some very clever engineers and, personally, I think Bautista is a major championship threat.

We also have some local interest this weekend with Australian wildcards Troy Herfoss in WSBK and Tom Toparis in WSS. They will both have an uphill battle against the world’s best riders on the world’s best bikes but they are in a continual development cycle and trying to bring our local bikes up to the world specifications has historically been all but impossible.

Nevertheless, we wish them all the best and eagerly look forward to what I think will be a stunning start to a competitive season of WSBK.

WSBK race 1 results and review

I wont spoil the results as I am sure not many woke up at silly o'clock in Europe to watch it. A few surprises is all I will say! Click the spoiler 'show' tag to see the news.
Spanish Rookie Bautista dominates from lap one to take first WorldSBK win, whilst Rea and Melandri join him on the podium.

The opening race of the 2019 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was a classic and went the way of Rookie, Alvaro Bautista (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati), who set a scintillating pace and was able to clear off at the front of the pack from lap one. Bautista took the win in a convincing manner, winning by more than 15 seconds to become the first Rookie to win a WorldSBK race on his debut since Max Biaggi in 2007.

Off the line for the first time in 2019, Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) got a good start before being sandwiched into Turn 1 by Alvaro Bautista and early race leader and pole-sitter, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). However, Bautista soon blasted into the lead at Turn 3 and from there, built a gap, setting back-to-back fastest laps and before half race distance, the 34-year-old had a gap of over eight seconds.

The battle was then firmly on for second position, with Rea, Haslam and Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team). Tom Sykes also had a good start to the race, with fifth place secured and chasing the leaders down hard. Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) was in sixth and made a rampant start, despite opting for a harder compound tyre choice. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Puccetti Racing) was a big mover and shaker after one lap, up to seventh from 14th on the grid.

The race evolved and began to take shape, with the KRT WorldSBK pairing of Rea and Haslam exchanging position frequently, whilst Tom Sykes and Alex Lowes also battled. Razgatlioglu made massive progress through the field and was soon into fourth place with an exciting move into Turn 1. It wasn’t long until the first race crasher of the year occurred, with Leon Camier at Turn 2 (Moriwaki Althea HONDA Team).

With Leon Haslam managing to get ahead of Jonathan Rea and pull clear, disaster struck for the former WorldSBK runner-up, as he crashed out of second at Turn 4. ‘Pocket Rocket’ Haslam eventually finishing 15th. This left Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes at the front of the battle for second position, whilst Toprak Razgatlioglu and Tom Sykes battled hard. The BMW of Sykes struggling to keep Toprak’s Kawasaki behind it on the front straight but then managing to get back ahead at the hairpins.

Later in the race, Marco Melandri started to make big in-roads to Dutchman, Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team). It wasn’t long before the Italian made his move into sixth place and then chased down the riders ahead of him. Soon, he got ahead of Tom Sykes and then Razgatlioglu at Turn 2 with six laps left, releasing him into clear air to hunt Alex Lowes and the final spot on the podium.

At the flag and Alvaro Bautista romped home with 14.9s to spare, a remarkable achievement; one that echoed Anthony Gobert’s dominant victory at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in 2000. Jonathan Rea took second position and conceded the first race of the season for a second consecutive year. The battle for third saw a remarkable effort from Marco Melandri flourish, able to get ahead of Alex Lowes to take the final position on the podium.

Michael van der Mark took fifth place to make it three Yamaha riders inside the top five, whilst Toprak Razgatlioglu completed the top six ahead of Tom Sykes. Sandro Cortese (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) was top German in eighth place ahead of Michael Ruben Rinaldi (BARNI Racing

Team) and a disconsolate Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) in tenth, some 27 seconds behind his victorious teammate.

With the first race complete for 2019, Alvaro Bautista breaks many records. He is the first Spanish Rookie to set a fastest lap at Phillip Island on a Ducati since Ruben Xaus in 2001, whilst also becoming the first Spanish rider to win a WorldSBK race since Jordi Torres in 2015 at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar

Watched the replay on ES now (without knowing the results) and the sprint race live. Well, it seems like Bautista is about to spank the poster boy a bit. We'll see how he does on tracks he doesn't know from MotoGP though ;)

WSBK race 1 was quite some display by Alvaro.
What puzzled me is that the tv coverage tried to avoid , like the devil the holy water, to show the left shoulder of his rear tire once the bike was back post race.
Johnny Reas post race interview was quite interesting I found, since he stated to have done the race at half gas in order to conserve tires. I have my doubts about it because he couldn't afford half gas until Leon crashed out.
Sounded more like one of these mind games, really.

While I am at it. SSP was quite a mockery as well and not a good advertising stunt. I for one wouldn't buy tires which last about 35 km. And in the end, we have pit time infringements but the penalty is just the infringement time. I find it a bit puzzling to dish out individual penalties rather than giving all the same penalty since all of them committed the same crime.

I didn't see the wsb's sprint race but I guess I'll get a replay soon.

Bautista spanks everyone & their mother. The Kawasaki Evil Empire will have to find a good excuse to justify this mess! ;)

Forgot to mention I really like the new format of having a short points paying (12 points for the win) 10 lap race for Superpole 2 on the Sunday.
The format is that the top nine finishers from the Superpole 2 race form the first three rows, with the rest of the grid, from 10th onwards, determined by Saturday's regular qualifying session.

With no concerns over the 10 lap distance for tyres it produced a balls to the wall dice for the lead, with Bautista taking the win from Rea.

Superpole race result.

And again tv tries to avoid showing the shoulder of the rear left tire of the winners bike.

So we’re going to ignore the huge straight line speed advantage of the Ducati? I suspect the extra revs that Ducati are allowed will be reigned in soon. That being said, Rea said after race 1 that his performance was all he could offer.

For years nee decades the WSBK was nothing but a Ducati benefit with the odd sprinkling of Honda and Yamaha winning, and Kawasaki playing the perennial underdog. No-one minded. Nowadays the Green meanie are the Evil Empire just because they’ve finally produced something to the rules that allows them to dominate like other manufacturers have before them?

Right, so who did say anything about Ducati's straight-line speed advantage? And the looming clampdown on revs? Not to mention Ducati has that S/L speed advantage in MotoGP too so that fits in line with their bike development. Kawasaki had a stroll in the park over the past few years, now it appears they've got a job on their hands (finally!).
