World Champion Jorge Lorenzo was substantially faster than the rest of the field after day one of 2016 winter testing. Sideshow will be appearing tomorrow.

MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo led Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi in the first day of pre-season testing at Sepang.

Lorenzo was more than one second clear at the top of the timesheets as race riders returned to action for the first time in 2016.

The Spaniard led the way for the majority of the day, and with his time of 2m00.684s was the only rider below the 2m01s barrier.

Rossi's best effort, 2m01.717s, came within the final hour to move up from the bottom half of the top 10, before a rain storm curtailed running.

The winner of last year's Malaysian Grand Prix, Dani Pedrosa was third and the best of the Honda riders, just 0.031 seconds behind Rossi, with team-mate Marc Marquez seventh.

Danilo Petrucci enjoyed a brief stint at the top of the times during the afternoon, and ultimately finished fourth, the Pramac Ducati rider one spot ahead of factory pilot Andrea Iannone.

On his satellite Avintia machine, Hector Barbera made it three Ducatis inside the top six after improving inside the last hour.

Petrucci's team-mate Scott Redding was eighth, ahead of Suzuki's Aleix Espargaro and LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow.

Eugene Laverty's day ended well before the rain storm, the Aspar Ducati rider crashing at Turn 4 and suffering a suspected right-hand fracture.

Are Aprilia in for another poor year? So far in two days of testing they've been bottom of the timesheets.

Petrucci, Pramac, MotoGP Sepang test 2016

Pramac Ducati's Danilo Petrucci was fastest in a Sepang MotoGP test disrupted by a massive crash for Loris Baz, and in which Jorge Lorenzo's pace again looked ominous.

Returning MotoGP tyre supplier Michelin withdrew its soft compound and mandated higher tyre pressure after what appeared to be a blowout sent Baz flying at 180mph on the pits straight.

The Avintia Ducati rider escaped with bruising and was able to rejoin the session later.

Petrucci was one of the riders who got in a flying lap on the softs before the incident, setting a 2m00.095s.

With only hards available for the rest of the day, that position looked safe.

But Lorenzo - who had dominated Monday's session - managed to get within 0.06 seconds of Petrucci's pace using hards on his Yamaha in the closing minutes.

That pushed Hector Barbera of Avintia down to third. Marc Marquez, Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi completed the top six.

Lorenzo was one of many riders to crash at Turn 5, with Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro also among those going down at the long left-hander - twice in Espargaro's case. All were unhurt.

In his first session alongside the MotoGP field since retiring at the end of 2012, Casey Stoner went ninth quickest, just behind works Ducati team-mate Andrea Iannone and Pramac rider Scott Redding.

Eugene Laverty sat out Tuesday's session to rest following his huge accident on Monday and went for further scans in hospital at the end of the day to assess whether he can ride on Wednesday.

Bradl has really dropped off in terms of results the last few years. He was a solid top 10 rider, but now seems to make up the numbers more than anything

Bradl is better than his results suggest, he's been somewhat unlucky. It looks like he's tailed off because he was dumped from LCR for Crutchlow and then took a Open class ride, which turned into the Aprilia seat late in 2015 when Melandri was fired. Bradl should be on a works Honda and should have replaced Pedrosa a few years ago.

Not sure who wrote it, Mark Gardiner or Mat Oxley, but it said that Stefan was one of the few who came near to tame the bitch of a bike (Honda) despite been thrown off a couple times. Stefan did what other top guys do too once they lose a top ride. Staying in contact with the majors by racing in lower ranked teams.
Also I remember that he almost instantly outqualified his teamate after replacing Melandri but lacked a bit in race pace.

Not too shabby but a victim of Honda policy and with top rides locked his only chance is to stick around in open class, producing good results and simply be there once a top ride frees due to circumstances

The sad thing is there are only a few top spots in MotoGP at the moment, despite having two classes. Quite a few good riders have slipped away on bikes that weren't top of the bunch.

Autosport.com wrote:Jorge Lorenzo fastest on final day of MotoGP test at Sepang
By Mitchell Adam Wednesday, February 3rd 2016, 10:23 GMT

Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo blitzed the final day of MotoGP's opening pre-season test at Sepang, as Casey Stoner starred for Ducati.

Reigning world champion Lorenzo topped the first day of the three-day test on Monday, and after setting the second-fastest time on Tuesday reasserted his dominance on Wednesday.

With one hour remaining, Lorenzo was 0.540 seconds clear of team-mate Valentino Rossi with a 2m00.016s effort, but there was more to come.

Lorenzo improved to 1m59.966s, the week's first lap beneath the two-minute barrier, and then underlined his dominance when he logged a 1m59.595s with 15 minutes remaining.

For good measure, he then recorded a 1m59.580s lap inside the final 90 seconds.

The lap was quicker than Lorenzo's fastest time during last October's Malaysian Grand Prix at the circuit, and just over half a second off Dani Pedrosa's pole lap, as the field was confined to Michelin's hard compound following Loris Baz's Tuesday crash.

More importantly, Lorenzo's time was 0.976s clear of Rossi, who did not improve in the afternoon after a rain shower interrupted running, while the first 90 minutes were also lost to inclement weather.

Honda's Marc Marquez slotted into third in the closing stages, but finished the day 1.303s behind Lorenzo.

LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow was another late improver and finished the day a strong fourth, while Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa was sixth.

Between them was Stoner.

The two-time world champion shared the track with the MotoGP field for the first time since 2012 on Tuesday, and continued that programme on the final day.

Riding Ducati's 2015 machine, Stoner set his lap of 2m01.096s on his first run, to go second at the time, and he finished the day fifth.

Tuesday pacesetter Danilo Petrucci was seventh, ahead of factory Ducati rider Andrea Iannone.

The Italian crashed early on his 2015 Ducati, before setting his fastest time on the 2016 Desmosedici, with team-mate Andrea Dovizioso 13th.

Scott Redding and Maverick Vinales completed the top 10, ahead of Hector Barbera and Aleix Espargaro.

Tech 3 Yamaha rider Bradley Smith was the busiest man of the day, logging 65 laps on his way to 16th, including a mammoth stint late in the day.

After sitting out Tuesday's running following his crash on Monday, Eugene Laverty returned to action and was 22nd fastest.

Phillip Island will host the next test on February 17-19.

Testing has been interesting. In Malaysia it was all about Lorenzo, who dominated the three days and was substantially quicker than anyone else. Philip Island has been a lot more open. Yamaha have been quick, but so have Honda and Suzuki are mixing it with the top runners. Ducati are there or there abouts. Aprilia have not been present in Australia as they are completing their first full prototype since rejoining in 2015.
