1947 Bob Frame's Fatal Wreck?

Post by Jesper Hvid » 2 months ago

This negative came with a note saying "Bob Frame's Wreck". I'm wondering if it's actually from his fatal IMCA sprintcar accident at the Steele County Fairgrounds:

It doesn't look like a sprintcar to me.

It's not a sprintcar, for sure. I've inverted it, but frankly I can't see anything on the car. No damage, no race number...That's not to say it isn't one of his wrecks, but I can't find anything online.

Unless the background etc. can be proven to be from that track, there's not much substance.

The car looks like a pre-war Indy car, like what his father drove, and why would that be raced as a sprintcar, more than a decade later.

I think this is most likely a case of mistaken ID, the negative was apparently found in that envelope with that text.

Unless Bob had a crash at an earlier point in his career, but there is nothing at all.

I don’t think Bob Frame was a notable enough driver that we would find anything of his. Personally I don’t see this having much worth, but I guess we’ll keep it in case something else pops up in the distant future.

Yes, exactly. It goes in the sorted bin.

One thing, tho, before that. Outdated indy cars were raced in the immediate post-war years, Ruttman and Caracciola crashed such vehicles on two occasions at Indy. Mixed cars as per class have been racing together in the past, to make up the field, perhaps. So the final question for now is: is there even one instance we can point to, from that era, where sprintcars and indy cars raced together on dirt tracks?

Yes, lots. Paul, could you do me a favour and post the inverted pic? Or, mail it to me? Thx.

Thanks. Will have a look at home about what I have on Bob Frame. It's not a lot, that's for sure, but this here looks pretty much like the sort of cars that ran IMCA at the time.
