1979 Crash! No. 2 Motor Racing Is Dangerous - And How!

Post by Jesper Hvid » 9 months ago

Here's the whole bloody thing... :haha:
in these exciting pages our cameramen have captured some of the most spectacular shunts seen on the world's racing circuits
Well, not really, at all... But there are some new good ones, some improved ones, and some additional ones, to what we have already seen, over the years. But other than that, this is probably mostly for older Australian motorsport fans, who may recognize some of the scenes. Some of the captioning for these photos is unfortunately pretty retarded.

The magazine was definitely worth the money, and quite a few of these items ought to be in the CPdB, which we'll see to, eventually.

Single-page scans were scaled down to 75%, and double-page scans are unscaled, with minimal loss to both sides. Number of page(s) to the left of thumbnails, 76 pages in all, click to enlarge.

There is a partial index of IDs below the thumbnails.

I'd like to have (full) IDs for the accidents on pp. 1 (all three)+45, 10 (bottom), 12-13, 25, 26-27, 35, 40, 55 (both), 61, 67 (top right corner), 68 (top one), 70-71 (top right corner), and 72 (bottom left corner), as these seem to me the most spectacular among the unsolved ones.

38-39 is Norm Beechey, and 1964-1966: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Beechey

One of the pics made the front page of Racing Car News, March 196x, where it says Calder. It also says Jack Brabham won at Sandown and Warwick Farm in the Tasman C'ship, so this can only be 1964. List revised.

46-47 is Colin Bond in the spun #1 Torana. Should be able to work out exactly where or when, this incident appears to take place at the start of the race.

EDIT: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=9194&p=296911&hili ... ce#p296911 END EDIT.

Colin Bond and Allan Grice, 1976, ATCC at Amaroo. List revised.

Item 30 is also from Amaroo and 1976, the other driver's name is Carter (#1), and there is another angle of that accident in the same video as contained the above Bond/Grice. List revised.

The Lawrie Nelson crash in #2 and #14 would be from 1976 (Nick Louis was actually driving at the time).

For #4, the Lex Davison shunt was in the Sandown Six Hour in 1964. The Teddy Pilette incident is probably a Formula 5000 crash, I'll have to do some more research on that. That John Goss one is from the 1975 Bathurst 1000, he didn't end up crashing.

#11 is most likely John Harvey.

The pileup in #14 is from an Australian Touring Car Championship race (or something running to the same rules), and it kind of looks like Lakeside to me. Keogh did flip there in the 1976 ATCC race but it wasn't involving any other cars.

#19 is Allan Grice (#6) spinning out John Harvey (#76), again an ATCC or associated event. It doesn't look major enough to warrant further searching.

#28 is from an ARCA race at Daytona in 1968, that's Bobby Mausgrover and Gerry Wooland. It's not a new photo.

#65 is this. https://youtu.be/B8vwa051BEY?t=7m35s

For #70/#71, the Fred Gibson shunt is from 1972, the #96 upside-down is from Amaroo, the Falcon #3 and Torana crash is from Oran Park (I've seen that before, don't remember who was in it).

Finally, #64 is funnily enough my cousin's uncle Barry Singleton in the 1979 Rothmans International Series at Oran Park.

http://www.oldracingcars.com/f5000/specials/gardos/
Singleton raced the Gardos at Surfers Paradise during the 1979 Rothmans International series and then crashed it at Oran Park.
http://www.oldracingcars.com/results/re ... aceID=OR79

He was in #19 there, so the other two would be Salt Walther (#77) and Jon Davison (#24).

Thanks for the info, I'll revise list as per. I was aware that the Lex had to be pre- his death.

That is two or three times Barry Singleton has come up in discussions on TFL now.... previously mentioned for his AGP and Sports car exploits IIRC> in the 2017 AGP thread.
