Former IndyCar medical director Dr. Michael Olinger dies at 69

Image

Dr. Michael Olinger, who looked after the IndyCar Series’ drivers for 13 seasons as its medical director, died on Thursday at the age of 69. Prior to his most recent appointment which spanned 2006-2018, Olinger joined the new Indy Racing League in 1996 as a trackside physician, and was continually promoted until becoming the series’ top medical official.

Olinger’s life was extraordinary in its endless dedication to service.

After enlisting in the Army where he became a pilot and completing his medical degree in Colorado, Olinger put his skills to work in emergency and rescue scenarios that found him on the ground at the World Trade Center following 9/11, the bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City, and natural disasters, among other high-profile postings.

Olinger’s vast and varied experiences made for one of IndyCar’s most fascinating characters. IndyCar legend Mario Andretti spoke for those who were fortunate to have Dr. Olinger waiting and ready on their behalf as part of the AMR Safety Team.

Until I saw that the intolerable Fernando Alonso is eyeing the Indy 500 in 2020.

Would be swell PR for the series, but man, a dick.

Shit man, with a Busch and Alonso in the 500, there's too many dicks for me to handle. Don't dangle them in front of my face like that.

Kurt Busch did a great job a few years ago, doing a double duty: Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600. He finished at the Indy 500 5th or 6th iirc.

Look now, if anyone can face that many dicks and handle them expertly, you're the man for the job

Lord, if only Dick Trickle were alive today. I'd give my left nut to see that trio at Indy.

https://www.gplatestnews.nl/nico-hulken ... car-series

Never heard of this site and I'm not sure how trustworthy it is but it claims Rinus "Veekay" van Kalmthout and Nico Hulkenberg to be announced for ECR next week, with the Hulk doing the road and street races.

F1 = Road to Indy. Keeps bombarding the series with superior talents.

Rinus van Kalmthout (VeeKay) announced full time in the ECR #21 car for 2020. Now maybe we'll get @erwin greven to follow the series as well.

ECR also confirmed that Nico won't race for them in 2020, so their road course ringer is still TBA. Conor Daly, perhaps?

@John Don't think so. Indycar won't spark any interest from me.

Good luck to Veekay. Would have been better if he went with Juncos or someone instead, but can't blame him either. Clearly has a lot of cash.

Foyt have told Robin Miller (on his podcast, I assume?) that he has three sponsors lined up which would ensure two full time cars for 2020.

The cars will probably still be awful though. Especially if they decide to plough on with the garbage driver / driver way past his peak combo.

Would be good for the series to still have Hinch full-time.
The Indiana Pacers unveiled their City edition jerseys which is a tribute to the speedway.

Much prefer the old (now defunct) Indianapolis Racers jersey if we're talking sports teams from Indianapolis.

That's good news if true.

What do people think of Leist? Any talent at all?

Showed promise in his first few tests, and clearly the Foyt cars are dogs. But I'd prefer a Nasr.

I thought he was develop more this year, but with Foyt being such a hot mess it's difficult to say if it's Leist that stagnated or if it's the wrench monkeys at Foyt Racing who can't give him a decent race car.

Only reasonable ride left seeing as Carlin is pay-to-ride. Wouldn't be the least surprised if Hinch gets the Dale Coyne ride.
