Just a reminder that there is some motorsport on in the world at this time of year, and the Mighty Dakar rally runs this year (for the 40th time) from the 6th - 20th January.
The badnews is that there is no Robby Gordon this year, but we have the usual top liners such as Loeb, Sainz, Mikka Hirvonen, Despres and of course Tim and Tom Coronel, racing this year in the 'car' category rather than the buggy of recent years.

A rundown of the categories and what makes them tick.

Image

Full list of competitors in all the categories available on https://www.dakar.com/en/competitors

Of course as well as cars and buggies there are also bikes, ATV's and the mighty trucks.

This year the route will start in Peru and finish in Argentina via Bolivia, starting in Lima and ending in Cordoba.
"After skimming the waters of the Pacific and a sand-packed start to the race, competitors will tackle an Andean trilogy with a different flavour.

"The Bolivian section of the rally will tackle multiple sides of Lake Titicaca, followed by a rest day in La Paz and a rather different trek through the Altiplano.

"The in-line course will let the 2018 Dakar come into its own in the third part of the rally, where the vast and varied terrain of Argentina will set the scene for the race.

"Many competitors already see Cordoba as the daunting peak they need to crown.

Indeed.... I was beginning to think that a lack of comments in the thread meant I was the only one interested. @CheeveerI'm sure we both would think it better had Robby Gordon once more been adding his unique contributions to this years event.

Thing is that the coverage has been shite the last couple of decades.

We have in past years got the daily Dakar Organiser supplied half hour reviews of the days stage. I presume they are on again this year on our SBS channel and showed twice daily. They are available online as well at the Dakar website and their official youtube. The website also offers live timing and tracking services for those wishing to follow live.

Interesting History of Dakar shown on UK TV back in 1997, so covers from 1979 - 1997. Quite amusing to compare the early basically converted road cars (ie an Audi powered VW thing and the Renault 4 all wheel drive) to the composite tailor made specials of today. Also shows the difficulties in the original Paris - Dakar days before the invention of GPS locators and Satnav!

50 minutes long it does a brief review of who did what by each year.

*For Aussie members interest*
Just to confirm I have checked the TV schedule in Australia and as expected the daily 30 minute highlights package is being shown on SBS HD every day between 5:30 - 6:00 pm. Although the rally starts on the 6th due to the fact we are 18 hours ahead of them the coverage on SBS starts on the 7th Jan.

For others in Europe I know Eurosport are covering it

@Erwin I checked on the website and as well as Eurosport, RTL7 are showing it in Holland according to the Dakar broadcasters guide. Not sure the level or frequency of their coverage just that they are listed as the official broadcaster for Holland.

All the world broadcasters are published in the Broadcasters link at the very top of their home page https://www.dakar.com/en

Sebastian Loeb reckons this year is his last chance to win Dakar. Having said that he is lacking confidence due to the increased number of dune stages this year. (Peugeot have also announced their withdrawal from the Dakar following this year's event)
Loeb confidence hit ahead of ‘last chance’ Dakar

Sebastien Loeb has admitted that an increase in the number of sand dune stages will hamper his chances in what he believes will be his “last chance” to win Dakar.

Loeb’s comments come after Peugeot announced that it would pull out of Dakar following this year’s edition.

The French manufacturer will enter four of its updated two-wheel-drive 3008DKR Maxi challengers in 2018, for back-to-back defending rally winner Stephane Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz, Cyril Despres, and Loeb.

“For me, it’s almost this year or never for the win,” said Loeb. “It’s my last chance to win it.

“There are many factors that come into play on the Dakar.

“It’s long and you can quickly lose everything, especially with the return of the dunes.

“It’s positive for the rally (to include more stages in the dunes) concerning the image that people have of rally-raid.

“On the other hand, it’s a type of terrain that I don’t have much experience of. It’s clearly a route that’s not in my favour.”

Loeb believes that his form in the previous two editions of the Dakar, which he has led both times before crashing in 2016 and suffering mechanical dramas last year, proves that he can be a genuine contender this time around.

OK Dakar 2018 is underway. The ATV and Bikes are doing their individual podium introductions and theyare heading off one by one for the posing to the crowd time. I think they refer to it as the liaison section. They are literally riding off the start podium without helmets and then going to a collection paddock down the road, I guess for the real start when the intros are over. There is a road link where I guess the riders / drivers and crew can get acclimatised and then they head on to a short sprint section. Then it will get more serious but right now nothing exciting to watch on the live feed on the Dakar Facebook page.( https://www.facebook.com/dakar/videos/1687175078008459/ )
The opening stage of the 2018 Dakar consists of a 242 km link section followed by a 31 km sprint near Pisco —the ideal start for competitors to find their feet and a great opportunity for the Peruvians to go full gas and shine for the home crowds!
Wishing all competitors, officials and spectators a safe and successful rally.

So there's a Borgward Rally Team? Seems so. I didn't know there's now a Borgward (West German auto manufacturer that disappeared in the 60's)...

Wow I remember the Borgward name and the Isabella in particular (I had a 'Dinky' toy die-cast one as a kid) but then they went out of business or disappeared years ago. I certainly did not know the founders grandson had 'rebirthed' the company 50+ years later.
Thanks for the heads up.
Be interesting to follow their progress. Wish them luck. :fingers:

.
Loeb has got off to a bad start to the event, managing to travel just 3 klms before his brakes failed and he lost over 5 minutes getting them fixed.
Nasser Al Attiyah is the early pacesetter in the cars. Very early days yet and a few minutes at this stage is nothing.
Sam Sunderland leading the bikes

Interestingly the Borgward of Fuchs is running 3rd at the moment, 34 seconds behind Al Attiyah.

So the guy who missed his supposed first Dakar in 2017 due to injuries sustained in an Evel Knievel-esque long-jump stunt, crashed out of the rally on KM 6 of stage 2. Ok.

Seen here:
