Aha, yes. I agree with that totally. Hopefully that will be updated as I am sure there will have been others who have mentioned it on social media. At least as they use more revs it will sound even better.

S5000 secures technical tie-up with Garry Rogers Motorsport.

This will effectively see GRM building the cars, offering technical support and be classified as the series official agent. They are taking in 13 cars, with serious enquiries on 10 already.

This will I presume entail fabricating components to allow the Onroak-Ligier to run the V8 engine and powertrain, a much larger engine than the chassis has used to date. Plus of course mating it all up reliably.

Borland Racing Developments, which has undertaken the initial design, engineering and construction work on the debut S5000 car, will continue to play a key role in the development of the cars.

Image
S5000 has struck a technical alliance with Supercars squad Garry Rogers Motorsport which will see the organisation build the first batch of cars that will debut next year.

The Melbourne squad, run by father and son Garry and Barry Rogers, will provide technical support for the all-new single seater category that is set to contest a six-round series on the Shannons Nationals calendar.

Growing interest in the series has seen organisers push the button on its first batch order, with GRM set to take delivery of 13 chassis from Onroak-Ligier in America early next year.

The 36-strong GRM workforce will be in charge of the significant engineering, fabrication and composite construction required to ensure the series kicks off next year.

Speedcafe.com understands that there is serious interest in 10 cars already.

The deal between promoters Australian Racing Group (ARG) and GRM will the see the outfit effectively become the official agent for the V8-powered S5000 single seaters, with prospective competitors to be directed to the team.

Great news I was not aware of until now is that the category has been given a run (the opening round of their 2020 series) at Albert Park supporting the Australian GP (March 12-15). Quite a support programme they have got together for the AGP. Maybe worth a visit on the Friday.

OK Just realised it was only announced yesterday!
Event organisers, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) have today confirmed the new V8 open wheel series will join a bumper support bill for the F1 season opener (March 12-15) that includes Supercars, TCR Australia and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia.

The Australian Racing Group, promoters of both S5000 and TCR Australia, had been in talks to also secure the former a spot at the Albert Park event with those discussions coming to fruition.

Today’s announcement comes in the week of the category’s maiden event at Sandown which will feature 11-time F1 race winner Rubens Barrichello.

It is expected that the S5000 class will feature a number of experienced open wheel stars from Australia and around the world, as well as a crop of next generation racing stars.

“There is always such a strong appetite from our fans for exciting on-track activity, so having the exciting S5000 class at our event is the perfect fit,” said AGPC CEO Andrew Westacott.

“AGPC is always looking to inspire the next generation of drivers and being able to showcase a new Australian motorsport category not just nationally, but globally, is such a fantastic opportunity for all involved.”

S5000 owners ARG are confident the new 560 horsepower single seaters will provide an added spectacle for fans at Albert Park.

“The Australian Racing Group is extremely pleased to confirm that S5000 will be on the grid at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2020,” said ARG’s Managing Director Matt Braid.

“These S5000 cars are going to be right at home on the Albert Park street circuit, and we look forward to providing the best racing for the fans.”

The length of the agreement with AGPC and race formats are yet to be confirmed.

S5000 category may see the return of the Australian Gold Star awards.

Apparently they are waiting to confirm it does not turn out to be a category of junior drivers... it is for the best open wheeler competitor in the country.
(Funny if Rubens did the full series and takes out the Australian Gold Star, should it be re-introduced. Yes all a bit hypothetical but it could happen. Unless there is small print that only allows it to be won by a n Aussie / Kiwi.

Awarded every year between 1957 and 2014, the CAMS Gold Star was traditionally awarded to the best performer in Australia’s premier open-wheel category. Nothing about them being an Aussie driver.

The award was inaugurated in 1957 and is believed to have been based on the British Racing Drivers Club’s (BRDC) famous Gold Star, itself founded several decades earlier

Actually just checked the former winners, and certainly at a quick glance not all are Aussies.... Ben Barker won it recently and is a Pom. As are Joey Foster Ben Cluclas and James Wilmslow (the latter winning more than once). Scott Dixon won it and he is a Kiwi. As is Daniel Gaunt.

The Australian Gold Star award.
The all-new S5000 series is an ‘obvious candidate’ for the reintroduction of the Gold Star according to CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca.

Last awarded in 2014, the Gold Star was aligned with the Australian Formula 3 Series before being pulled midway through the 2015 season.

It ended a tradition that ran back to the tail end of the 1950s in Australia where the award was given to the leading open wheel racer in the country.

However, the flagging fortunes of Formula 3 at the time saw CAMS put the award on ice.

For a time it was suggested it could make a return with Formula 4, though Arocca claimed that was never a consideration

“The Gold Star has not been awarded by CAMS for some four years now,” he told Speedcafe.com.

“It’s sitting dormant at the moment, waiting for a premier open wheel category to be attached to.

“I would never have thought Formula 4 would be a candidate for Gold Star.

“(The) Gold Star, historically, is for essentially the best open wheel competitor in Australia.

“So CAMS at this stage is still waiting and hoping that an open wheel category that is not a junior development one that would put forward a claim to be entitled to that Gold Star.

“Until we believe, this is the position of the Board, that there is a category that merits that sort of recognition, with the standard of driving recognised by that sort of award, then we would certainly very happily consider reintroducing the Gold Star.

“They’re an obvious candidate but they haven’t run a race yet,” Arocca responded when asked if S5000 could be the new home for the award, but cautioned that it’s unlikely to be in the immediate future.

“The last thing we would want to do is come out and announce a Gold Star for a category that hasn’t run and then for whatever reason, and we learned a little bit about being presumptuous about the market with Formula 4, if for whatever reason it doesn’t continue or succeed or become sustainable then we again have to retire the Gold Star.

“I think most people would understand entirely that we should adopt a wait and see approach to make a decision on whether and when the Gold Star should be brought back.”

The inaugural S5000 event will be held as part of the Shannons Nationals at Sandown this weekend.

Im a little confused as to the actual event format.... the schedule shows practice on Friday which we have had, and then has for Saturday qualifying at 11.15am followed by a Qualifying Race.

Sunday again has a qualifying race followed by a race.

From the s5000.com.au website:

FRIDAY PRACTICE 1:
12:20PM

FRIDAY PRACTICE 2:
3:25PM

SATURDAY QUALIFYING:
11:15AM

SATURDAY QUALIFYING HEAT 1:
2:20PM

SUNDAY QUALIFYING HEAT 2:
10:05AM

SUNDAY MAIN RACE:
2:15PM

....but no explanation over the purpose or duration of the two qualifying races.
Presumably qualifying will set the starting grid for the qualifying race on Saturday....
Maybe Sundays qualy race starts on the finishing order of Saturdays qualy race and finalises the Main Race grid???? :dunno:

Further down the track I am looking forward to them running at Bathurst next year as part of the TCR enduro event (Scheduled for December 2020). ARG (Aus Racing Group, promoter of TCR and S5000) Director Matt Braid confirmed that an S5000 race will be included in the event’s schedule.

Obviously a render but we will see it next year....

Wow! Open wheel on Bathurst.

Is that very common, that open wheelers are racing at Bathurst?

Historically going back to the 70's and before, it was popular, with regular open wheeler races.

In fact in 1952 the AGP was held there. Stan (father of Alan) Jones finished 2nd in a Maybach. Also in 1958 when Lex Davison (Grandfather of Alex and Will Davison of Supercars fame and James Davison who races overseas) won in a Ferrari. Also the AGP was held there in 1947 and 1938.

1952 AGP Bathurst

Our very own @theracer120 has uploaded the 1938 race to youtube

More recently there have been AF3, FFord and FVee races held there.
AF3 lapped in the 2:04 zone back in 2012. I think back in 2012 when AF3 ran as support to the Easter 6 hour event it was the first open wheeler race there for over 30 years.
Image

FVee have run a few times since the F3s ran in 2012., Not always without incident.... this from their first race in 2013.

Earlier this year as a support event for the Bathurst 12 hour, Formula Ford had a special event celebrating the 50-year history of Formula Ford racing in Australia, and included a huge field of modern and historic racecars racing.

Of course for promotional purposes Jenson Button and Craig Lowndes lapped Bathurst in a Vodafone McLaren F1.

No it's more complicated then that. I can't even be bothered trying to explain it, it's some stupid format that is intended to artificially make the racing more interesting.
