Bottom post of the previous page:

The Kiwi pairing of Haydon Paddon and John Kennard, a relationship that has seen Kennard co driving for Padden for the last twelve years, is to formally split after the Rally of Finland in July. Apparently it is no surprise to Paddon or Hyundai, with Kennard always considering stepping down from his role. No doubt the increases in speed has had some influence in his decision, not to mention the number of crashes Paddon has been making a habit of.

No replacement has been named as yet, but news will be forthcoming shortly. I'm sure Kennard is looking at his age (55) in the making of his decision, as he is no spring chicken... and also having been involved in Rallying since 1979, when he started as a driver. His first WRC role as a co-driver was in 1988, as co driver for Malcomn Wilson! He has since had a long and distinguished career with the notes.

It will be interesting to see how Paddon goes with the loss of the co driver he has enjoyed since the start of his career, and the need to form a new partnership.
World Rally Championship star Hayden Paddon will team up with a new co-driver later this year following the announcement that John Kennard will step down from the role.
Kennard has partnered Paddon during a 12-year period that has seen the pair rise up the ranks to rallying’s top tier.
The experienced co-driver has confirmed his last WRC rally alongside Paddon in the factory Hyundai i20 will be Rally Finland in July.
Paddon’s new co-driver will be announced in the coming days.
The pair became the first New Zealanders to claim a world rally title by winning the 2011 Production World Rally Championship.
Paddon and Kennard went on to win a full WRC event in Argentina last year.
Kennard competed in New Zealand as a driver back in the late ‘70s, but moved to the co-driver’s seat in 1985, claiming his first WRC podium alongside Kiwi driver Malcolm Stewart at Rally New Zealand in 1988.
He also worked for WRC teams, firstly as team co-ordinator for Mitsubishi Japan, a similar role with Prodrive’s Subaru World Rally Team and then a year managing Mitsubishi’s rally programme in USA.
The introduction to Paddon in 2005 brought Kennard back into the sport competitively.
Together, Paddon and Kennard won the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2008 and 2009.
The following season saw the pair part of the Pirelli Star Driver Programme, securing third in the Production World Rally Championship.
Four straight PWRC wins secured the 2011 championship title for the Kiwis – a history-making achievement in New Zealand motorsport as the first Asia-Pacific driver/co-driver combination to ever win a world rally championship title.
“After 12 years as Hayden’s co-driver, it will be hard to lever myself out of that Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC seat for the last time,” said Kennard.
“But our deal has always been that I help Hayden in the most effective way possible and to have been his co-driver for so long, has been incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.
“When we first got in a car together, in 2006, the dream of winning the WRC seemed so far away.
“But now, as we push to achieve that ultimate goal, it’s timely that we re-arrange roles for maximum effect and to help complete the quest we’re all on – to bring the WRC Championship trophy home to New Zealand.”
Reflecting on their time together, Paddon admits Kennard has been influential in his rise up the rallying ranks.
“Obviously, John has played a huge part in my career since we started working together at the end of 2005,” said Paddon.
“We have achieved so much together and it has been quite a journey of highs and lows.
“It’s certainly sad to end the partnership, but we have been discussing over the last couple of years when was the best for both of us to make the transition with an eye towards the future.
“I can’t thank John enough for everything he’s contributed in these 12 years, but this is not the end.
“He will stay involved, helping me behind the scenes and, as he has played an important part in the journey so far, it’s only natural that he remains a part of it.”

Ogier facing Mexico Exclusion.

Sebastien Ogier could face exclusion from the results of last week's Rally Mexico, pending an FIA investigation into the gearbox on his Ford Fiesta WRC, which is allegedly under the homologated weight..

Ogier, who finished second in Leon on Sunday, was looked at in post-event scrutineering with a query raised over the gearbox. The gearbox has been sealed, removed from the M-Sport car, and sent to the FIA for investigation, following which a report and recommendation will be issued.

Any illegal findings are likely to be met with a penalty even exclusion from the results, which although made official have been qualified as subject to post rally investigation of the #1 car of Ogier.

If he does lose his points he will also lose his WRC lead. (Nothing against Ogier but no one wants a runaway leader, and give the others a chance.)

I'm pretty sure someone is very happy about the "Kris Meeke incident" outcome.

That's great! I didn't originally see that he hit a car when he went off.

Yeah, I think that impact in the car park might be the cause of the puncture that he had to deal with in the final couple of klms. Very lucky to get away with what could have been another retirement.
But at least he was trying hard to the end, even though with a lead of nearly 40 seconds he could have eased off a bit. I guess he was after the power stage bonus points.

Replacement named:

Englishman Seb Marshall has been confirmed as Hayden Paddon’s new co-driver starting at the Rally Deutchland.

They will pair up prior to that in the non (WRC) championship Rallye Sanremo in an i20 R5.
The event will form part of Hayden’s preparations for the Tour de Corse, as he continues to improve his consistency on tarmac when he will be back about Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC.
Marshall has experience of the New Generation i20 R5, having worked with the Customer Racing department throughout the development phase of the project last year.
“The whole purpose of the rally is just to get more time behind the wheel and to get more comfortable on tarmac,” said Paddon.
“With Seb sitting in the car with me, it’s also a chance for us develop our partnership with an eye on the future.”
“It’ll be my first time at Rallye Sanremo and I’m really looking forward to it. Competing the week before the Tour de Corse should be the perfect warmup for that event.
“It will be a good opportunity to get some more mileage on tarmac on very twisty and demanding roads that are similar to Corsica.”

Not sure where to post this, but rallying legend Timo Mäkinen has passed away, aged 79.

Image

n 1967, Timo Mäkinen drove his Mini at a high speed through the famous Ouninpohja stage of the 1000 Lakes with the car's bonnet open. Leather straps holding the bonnet were not thoroughly tightened, and they opened after a few rough bounces. He tried to put his head out of the side window but his helmet was too big and he could only stick his head halfway out. So he had to skid the car sideways continuously to see the road ahead. Even so, Mäkinen was third fastest on that special stage and he also won the rally overall, for the third year in a row.

Wins:
1964 Tulip Rally (Mini Cooper S)
1965 Monte Carlo Rally (Mini Cooper S)
1965 1000 Lakes Rally (Mini Cooper S)
1966 1000 Lakes Rally (Mini Cooper S)
1966 Three Cities Rally (Mini Cooper S)
1967 1000 Lakes Rally (Mini Cooper S)
1972 Hong Kong Rally (Ford Escort RS1600)
1973 Arctic Rally (Ford Escort RS1600)
1973 1000 Lakes Rally (Ford Escort RS1600)
1973 RAC Rally (Ford Escort RS1600)
1974 RAC Rally (Ford Escort RS1600)
1974 Rallye Côte d'Ivoire (Ford Escort RS1600)
1975 RAC Rally (Ford Escort RS1800)
1976 Rallye Côte d'Ivoire (Peugeot 504 V6)

In 2010 he was inducted into the Rally Hall of Fame.

RIP.
2018 GTP Accuracy champion.

Had to laugh at the prank MSport played on its departing driver of many years Ott Tanak, who rounded off his M-Sport career with a 2nd place in Australia, the final round of the year.

They rigged up a system which squirted water into his crutch every time he selected 3rd gear on the road stage link, so he finished the last stage with a wet patch in his overalls!
“My balls are nicely wet now,” said Tanak in the post-event media conference.
“Let’s put it this way; as M-Sport won the championship this means they must have some quite good engineering… so they made some special system so every time I switch to third gear on the road section, some pipes were wetting my balls.”
