I just walked in and missed the incident and in time to see the rain. And the green flag

Not the most exciting race in the world with Morgan taking the win from pole, controlling the race all the way.. The weather did not affect the race and the rain stopped after a short drizzle. Some battles down the field and a turnaround in the title race with championship leader Ingram dropping out on the last lap with what seemed like an electrical fault which has plagued the team of late. His demise giving Turkington, finishing 7th, enough points to lead the title race by 3. Good news for Turks is that he will shed plenty of weight for the next race. (2 hours time)

@Kals will no doubt have had a fit when (Tom) Chilton snuck a podium on the run to the flag.

I watched the 60 second highlights of the race earlier and thought that Smiley was ahead of Chilton on the run to the line. Will have to watch the full race later. To be honest, I was more annoyed at what happened at turn two on lap one with Sam Tordoff being used as a brake by Dan Cammish and one of the privateer Hondas.

I wonder what happened. Thankfully we don't get too many marshal fatalities nowadays.

I was at Karlskoga for Kanonloppet, a weekend that went from tragic, to feel-good, to controversial.

On Saturday, the marshall was killed in an accident during the GT support qualifying session. I believe this was the first fatality in Swedish circuit racing since Ronnie Peterson. So the feeling in the paddock on Sunday was a bit gloomy. But the racing turned out great, and there was a nice tribute to the deceased marshall as well. And then Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky's maiden win (also first female winner in STCC's history) became a wonderful feel-good story for the weekend.

However, then politics reared it's ugly head. The entire PWR team (Åhlin-Kottulinsky, race 1 winner Daniel Haglöf, championship leader Robert Dalhgren and Philip Morin) was excluded from race 1 as race 2 was going on, and then Mikaela was stripped of her historic win a couple of hours later. Sounds like the exclusion is due to some technicalities over paperwork more than the actual exhaust system they have been using. It's sad that this protest hasn't been lodged earlier in the year, but that the team that protested waited until this pivotal point in the championship to voice their concerns.

Was sagt der Chef dazu?

Aston Martin announce 2019 DTM entry.

So back to three manufacturers involved, although unlike the Mercedes entry it seems the AM involvement is hardly a factory team, and not works supported. They will however be involved in development by virtue of a joint venture company.

A car based on the Vantage is hoped for 2019.

Probably an improvement over the two car Audi and BMW involvement which dates back to being like the old Holden Ford contest of V8SC.

The DTM has announced that Aston Martin will be represented on the 2019 grid thanks to a new entry to be run by R-Motorsport and HWA. R-Motorsport has an existing relationship with Aston Martin through its sportscar programme, with the new DTM project licensed and blessed by the British marque, although it is not a works-supported team.

Aston has also founded a joint venture with HWA AG and the partnership is responsible for the development, building and running of the DTM cars.

The DTM has confirmed that, development permitting, the new manufacturer will bring a car based on the Aston Martin Vantage for the 2019 season.

It means that the championship will have three marques represented on the grid after Mercedes signalled its intent to leave the series at the end of 2018 in favour of Formula E last year.

Audi and BMW have committed to the DTM for the foreseeable future and had been willing to make 2019 a bridging year by running extra cars to fill the gap left by Mercedes, with customer cars still expected next year.

“This decision of a luxury sports-car manufacturer such as Aston Martin is a historic event for our series and a milestone for the international orientation of DTM," said Berger.

Berger added that the growing international ambitions of the DTM, which has now split its calendar by having half its races in Germany and the other five internationally, helped attract the Aston Martin entry.

The DTM has also merged with Super GT in regards to its regulations, under the Class One umbrella.

“I am convinced that the internationalisation- orientated cooperation of ITR and GTA [Super GT's organisers] as well as Aston Martin’s decision to join DTM will have signalling effects for further manufacturers,” said Berger.

“The cooperation with GTA, the internationalisation of our platform and the acquisition of further brands represent some of our most important strategic goals.

"We will push the international expansion in compliance with teams and manufacturers, a development that is supposed to be underlined by an adaption of the name of the series from 2020.”

Dr Florian Kamelger, founder and co-owner of AF Racing AG and R-Motorsport team principal added: “We are delighted by joining together with Aston Martin in a renowned top series with international orientation.

“Competing with premium manufacturers represents a major challenge for our brand. The new technical regulations and the extended international orientations of the series were important reasons for our decision.”

BMW and Audi have welcomed R-Motorsport's decision to join the DTM, with Audi motorsport boss Dieter Gass believing "that Aston Martin, Audi and BMW will make for thrilling top-class motor sport.

"We had tough times and we fought hard, with great support of all the manufacturers involved, ITR and – last but not least – Gerhard Berger.

"I’m happy that we now finally can announce the future involvement of Aston Martin and that the success story of DTM will be continued.”

BMW motorsport boss Jens Marquardt added that "our trust in the continuity of DTM and the numerous hours we worked jointly with ITR and Audi paid off".

The title went to one of the two right people. Had Rast secured the title then it would have been an utter travesty to Di Resta and Paffett. The mid-season rule change took Audi from being also-rans to the dominant manufacturer. Rast's 6 successive wins was impressive though.
