1970 Jimmy Dunne Info - Possible Fatal Accident

Post by Motorsportrace » 2 years ago

I was reading the Motorsportmemorial.org 1970 entries, while I found these:

http://motorsportmemorial.org/focus.php?db=ct&n=4213
http://motorsportmemorial.org/focus.php?db=ct&n=4215

We only know the drivers' names: no place of death, no car, no event, nothing.

The only known sources are three Italian ones: a book by De Carli, a "La Stampa" article and another article by Autosprint:

http://www.archiviolastampa.it/componen ... news,true/
https://v8blog1970.files.wordpress.com/ ... df#page=10

Could it be that these drivers actually didn't exist at all, or that the writer got them wrong and mispelled them?
It's clear that the Autosprint article is basically a copy of the "La Stampa" one.

And I can't really understand how only three Italian sources listed two accidents involving drivers with English (or American) names (I doubt the crashes happened in Italy, otherwise they would've appeared on newspapers, etc.).

Can someone help me?

Have you tried "find a grave"?

And yes, the information could be wrong. I've had a 'case' in which a newspaper reported the death of "Harre Steubel" during the Fischereihafenrennen in Bremen.
I've contacted the organisers - who were very very friendly and helpful - and they could not confirm this story. They even talked to gentlemen drivers from that era and the result stayed the same. They speculated about a driver who might have died shortly after the event due to an illness.

So yeah, newspaper articles can be wrong, especially if the name is the only piece of information available.

Maybe, you're able to find someone who's worked for "Autosprint" or "La Stampa" during that time.

That's definitely worth a try, if you ask me.

Thanks for the information, I'll try that (although I really doubt anything will come out of this).

The mail system of the La Stampa archive has problems.
The e-mails can't be delivered to them... fantastic.

Well, now we have something more about Richard Colley:

Maybe we can find something about Jimmy Dunne too...

Well done, I'm altering the topic title to an info request about Jimmy Dunne's alleged fatal accident.
You only have to read the lines of scribbly black and everything shines.

The above photo comes from Facebook, of course. I'll ask in a couple of groups if anyone has heard of Jimmy Dunne.

Coincidentally I stumbled across another Jim Dunne who was killed in a rally accident in 1992. His entry is missing entirely:
May 3: A fatal accident mars the Carlow Stages Rally. Co-driver Jim Dunne succumbs to injuries sustained when George McCarron's Opel Manta left the road. The event is abandoned; Bertie Fisher (Subaru Legacy) takes a hollow victory.

Searched. Found nothing.
Racing is living and everything that happens in between is just waiting.

Thanks, that's very interesting.
I'm wondering where the La Stampa journalist read about it... must be an English newspaper of some sort.

I've just searched, and found a "Jimmy Dunne Memorial Race" at Mondello Park, 1970:

Certain Jim Dunne died on 4 July 1970 and was buried at Saint Maelruain Cemetery in Tallaght, Ireland: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/106381485/jim-dunne. Maybe it's him, but I cannot confirm it.
