F1 1984 R02 Kyalami Saturday Practice Piercarlo Ghinzani

Just watched this race and they showed some aftermatch of this huge looking crash.
As far as I could see, the car was torn in half on impact and resulted in a big fire.
Ghinzani received burns to his face and hands.
It happened at the very fast left hander after Barbeque.

Are there any pictures from this? Couldn't find any on the forum.

Looks like it yes. Was difficult to see from the aftermath. Thanks.

As we can see, the car was torn in half by the impact and the monocoque it is said somersaulted down the road with a trail of fuel which caught fire. Ghinzani suffered burns to his right hand when he took his glove off to undo his seat belts. Other than minor burns he was unhurt. The corner, turn 3 in those days, is known as the Jukskei Sweep

Oh, and it was in the race morning warm up rather than practice. He had qualified in the top 20 but did not start the race... in fact Boutsen, in an Arrows, who had not qualified (27 cars entered for 26 places) was called in to take Ghinzani's race spot. Ghinzani was back for the next race.

In terms of trivia, Kyalami 1984 was the race in which Senna scored his first ever F1 point, driving the Toleman.

I picked a random autosprint (13 july 2010) in my toilet and I found an interview to Ghinzani that clarifies the issues
Piercarlo Ghinzani wrote:...The same year (1984), I've had a terrible accident. During warm up in a 290km/h flat out curve, I crashed into a banking. The car, with 240 liters of fuel on board, was torn in two halves and took fire. I escaped with minor burns

Guess it could still happen today.

This was also Niki's first race win of the season if my memory serves me well.
