It has, oh, but how it has... What is due, is the recognition of the lyrical side of KC. Sinfield's work. There appears to be less focus on that, in this KC renaissance. We are now 21st Century Schizoid Men, but the Court persists, and the King still reigns, in crimson splendour. Sinfield should be ranked alongside Lord Dunsany, and above J. R. R. Tolkien. A master of allegoric fantasy. Or is there even more to it...?John wrote:

(jumping in at the crucial artistic moment, and it simply will not do, if you detest explanations)

This is why Lizard is the true KC masterpiece, and it stands alone proudly. I believe it to be the greatest piece of esoteric music ever recorded, in every conceivable understanding of the term.
However, if one prefers the psychedelic naïvité of Syd Barrett (not lead vox on this), there is always this:
Either suits me, any day of the week. Everything that truly matters in life is found in another plane than the physical, anyway. The occult is a sham, and true spirituality transcends aeons of time, space, and existence itself. That is why Sinfield is an artist of the very highest order. A poet.
Thanks for liking King Crimson.

It's the point when Dio became the wizard. From the 3rd person singular, to the 1st. The tale was no longer from the objective point of view, he became the embodiment of Heavy Metal. Ozzy attempted the same, but his mysticism drowned in alcoholic wretchedness. I relate to both states of mind. Ozzy the Lycanthrope, Dio the Sage. Gollum and Gandalf. This dualism lasted for a quarter of a Century, and split the metal community into two schools, a serious and an unserious one. Ronnie is dead, Ozzy is brain dead. Heavy Metal lasted, silly hair metal failed. Should be easy to work out who's the greater of the two. They now apparently wish to tour Dio as a hologram. Sorry, I gotta go, I need to listen to some King Crimson.Andy wrote:I had mentioned it before but in terms of what Accept used to create BreakerMawerick wrote:'Stargazer' has been mentioned before, but how about 'A Light In The Black'? What do you guys define as "Epic"?
Genesis? Really?
I'm not sure I'd call Genesis rock at all.
Discussed this with 5 friends and not one thinks of Genesis as a rock bank.

To make it clear: We're talking about the Genesis where Phil Collins was behind the drums, and not at the mic. It's one of the most important rock bands of all times. Listen to "The Knife" and tell me that isn't rock music? They are right up there with Deep Purple, Led Zep and the other icons of the early 1970's. Peter Gabriel was absolutely amazing.

WHAT???????
I went back and played the Knife and showed them your answer.. They laughed, we agree as does my wife, that THAT ain't rock music.
If you like it fine, but don't conflate it with rock and roll.

Rock n roll - that's Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. Is that what you're talking about?
Genesis (the 1968-1975 incarnation) is progressive rock. Just like Rush, King Crimson, and Saga, Yes and Jethro Tull. How would you label it then?

Well I guess the definition is in the eye of the beholder.
Yes Buddy Holly etc were the beginnings of rock. It goes back further but that's a different bag of worms.
I'm thinking it all comes down to birthdate.
If what they were peddling from 80 on as rock is what you grew up with I guess that's what you think is rock.
It's kinda like when I was young and the bands like the Stones labeled themselves as playing Blues.. and I bought that..THEN a friends brother opened up his closet and showed what the blues really was and the songs the Stones stole and claimed credit for.
Because of when I was born and the prejudices of radio stations we didn't know real blues so when they portrayed themselves as blues, I mean the albums and magazines said so, I/we believed.
I don't know what I'd call Yes, or Jethro Tull but it would not be ROCK in my mind simply because it doesn't rock.
Rock and Roll makes you want to move. To dance, to drive fast.
BUT, It's all what ya like ... screw the labels
Near as I can tell for many this is epic rock and roll
