When I woke up this morning, it said in the 5:30am news that Paul Kantner, co-founder and guitarist of Jefferson Airplane, has died aged 74 from a heart attack.

January 2016 was (or is) not very kind for musicians.

Just something I never understood. This album is regarded as one of the psychedelic landmark albums in rock. Kantner in the foreground, posing like Andy Warhol or Dali or something. But this album, it's not really a rock album, and it's not really psychedelic, either. It's very good, fine musicians (check out the superb acoustic instrumental Embryonic Journey at 27:18), plus 2 permanent classics on there, but it wouldn't have worked without the vocal harmonies and Grace Slick's voice (she can't sing, BTW, but she has that crucial sensuality). Take Somebody to Love, White Rabbit (which would have been far more epic, if longer) and the instrumental away from this album and what do you have, other than a lightweight version of The Byrds. Surrealistic Pillow is a period piece from the key year of 1967, and that's the only reason it's being grouped with most other - real - psychedelia. This album is about as surrealistic and psychedelic as Andy Warhol himself. Which is to say, not at all. And if so, then Simon & Garfunkel are also psychedelic. The term is meaningless, when everything sounding just slightly in that direction goes straight into that magician's hat, and then White Rabbits pour out. AHA! Typical psychedelia. Typically late-60s. Typical nonsense. A pretty good album, but I haven't listened much to them, as they're clearly 2nd division. Is there anything worth checking out later on in their career? Jefferson Starship was utterly awful.
