You know the rules. Try to answer without the help of Mr Google or reference material. First to come up with the right answer sets the next question.

I will kick start things with this:

Mercedes chose to race once not in their traditional racing livery, but chose to race with their cars painted red. Where did it happen, when and what was their reason for the revised livery? Oh, and what model car?
Bump. Clue ..... it was not in Formula 1.

Giulio Masetti drove a red Mercedes at the Targa Florio (at least) once, I think it was in 1922, but I'm not sure that was a "works" entry. If you're looking for a Mercedes-Benz answer, their rally cars were never white, as far as I can recall, they were gold/black or gold/maroon in the late seventies, for instance. So, do you mean Mercedes or Mercedes-Benz?

I was looking for the Targa Florio answer, so I guess Mercedes is the answer. (My bad for not differentiating). I think the 1922 Masetti entry was a private entry but in 1924 there was also a Mercedes driven by a German in 'non traditional' colours. All you need to answer now is the colour and the alleged reason of the colour change, which was applicable to both entries.

Red, so the Italians would think it is an Italian car and won't attack it.

Correctamundo.

Specifically because it was not unknown for the locals to throw stones at the opposition. Red acted as a disguise.

This is the 1924 car,

Image
1924 Mercedes Targa Florio
The car is based on the 1923 Indianapolis car, redesigned by Ferdinand Porsche.

DMG’s new chief designer Porsche had got off to an excellent start when he prepared this car for the 1924 Targa Florio. The engine, built in 1923, was completely done over and modified to include a number of innovations, like filling the exhaust valves with mercury for an improved heat abstraction.

Contrary to the regulations on the colouring of racing cars according to their nationality, this car was painted red instead of white, which was the official German livery . Reportedly, this was meant to stop spectators at the Targa Florio from recognizing the car as a competitor’s marque and throwing stones at it, a common practice at the time. Surely not only for this reason, the car was victorious with Werner at the steering wheel, once more demonstrating the capability of the supercharger.

This race also marked the DMG debut of Alfred Neubauer who was later to become race manager. The car was used in numerous races after its debut in the Targa Florio. For the 1924 Semmering race, Salzer fitted the Targa Florio chassis with a 4.5 litre engine, taken from 1914 GP and additionally equipped with a supercharger. Salzer could establish a record.

A future World Champion finished 19th in his only ever F 2 start, still unlapped. Who was he?

Hm.... A good one, that.

I've no idea. I'm going to go with Mario Andretti and hope that he had one miserable F2 weekend somewhere.

Im presuming this to be a pukka F2 start as opposed to one in an F2 car at a combined race (ie Germany in days of old), or when F1 was for F2 cars in the early 50's.

Not Andretti, and not a combined F 1/F 2 race. There's a clue in the "unlapped", though...

I'm not getting that clue at all...

So we're looking at a driver to moved pretty much straight from f3 to F1. James Hunt?

James Hunt did F2 with Hesketh backing from memory, and they decided to go to F1 because it wasnt much more expensive and the parties were better. :haha:

Ill throw Phil Hill in as a guess.

Not 'Feel Heel'. Non-European is correct, though, but think more southern.

@erwin greven No, he finished the race on the lead lap. 19 finishers on the lead lap, doesn't happen that often at Pau, or Zolder, or Thruxton. At xxx, however, it's not that unusual. ;)
