In history we have had only one instance when one of the main manufacturers was not present for a round of the Australian Touring Car Championship. Question is which manufacturer, what race, what year, and what happened to cause this unintended absence?
After two weeks, I think it's safe to say we don't know the answer.
OK Sorry I forgot about this one otherwise I would have given clues. I thought it might have been easy given only Holden and Ford have been at all bar one meeting, and Aus being known for its Ford v Holden rivalry.
The question was a bit of trivia mentioned on our RPM Motorsports weekly on Channel 10 FTA at the time of the recent WInton VASC meeting.
Yes the meeting in question was at Winton, back in 1985 when the championship was held for Group A cars for the first time. Up to 1984 (from I think 1973) it had been for Group C spec cars. The Winton ATCC The meeting was held in February, as season opener. It was also the first ATCC event held at the track. This brought about a series of firsts for the ATCC.
The missing make was Holden. Peter Brock had built and readied a single car but raced it at the Wellington 500 in the days when cars were shipped by sea. (Wellington that year was a non championship race. After serious concerns about the narrowness of the circuit as well as safety, the circuit did not pass FIA inspection. For the race to be able to go ahead the promoters had to re-write the regulations turning the event from an international race to a national race, thus eliminating the need for FIA approval.)
Brock's car competed in Wellington iat the end of January but was delayed in transit back and was not back in Australia in time for the Winton ATCC race held on the 9th of February.. His car was back and ready in time for round 2 at Sandown later in the month, an event in which Brock won his only round of the year.
In fact New Zealand drivers won 9 of the 10 ATCC rounds held that year, the title being won by Australia resident Kiwi Jim Richards in the JPS BMW 635. Richards won 7 rounds of the Championship,(Winton, Wanneroo, Adelaide, Calder, Surfers, Lakeside and Amaroo,) with Brock winning Sandown and (Kiwi) Robbie Francevic won two rounds (Symmons Plains and Oran Park) in his Volvo 240T .
Another bit of trivia relating to the year is that Francevic, who lived in and commuted from Auckland to race that year became the first ever non Aussie resident to win a round of the ATCC.
The first round of the series at Winton also created history when for the first time since the ATCC was first held in 1960, no Holden of any sort was on the grid. The race also saw the first ever ATCC race win by a BMW with Richards winning by a lap from his new JPS team mate, fellow New Zealander Neville Crichton. Richards' win in the BMW also saw the first ATCC round win by a European car since Jim McKeown won the 7th and final round of the 1970 ATCC at Symmons Plains in a Porsche 911S
So Winton was the only ATTC / V8SC race in history to not feature a Holden.
First ever ATCC round held at Winton.
It was also the first ever ATCC race win by a BMW.
First in with another question gets the gig.
