Today (12th) was JLS birthday and ironically yesterday is the anniversary of when he stood in at the Italian GP for the Chicken Poxed Nigel Mansell. Mansell was out for a few races and previously Martin Brundle had been used as a sub, but Martin was running in the (Jaguar?) WSC race the weekend of Monza so couldnt make it.The Khan wrote:PTRACER wrote:Happy Birthday!

Well dunno about magnificent.... DC was in an easy lead ahead of Mika in a McLaren 1-2 and MS was 3rd close to MH. DC had an engine blow, and thus lost what would have been an easy win. Mika and MS arrived at the chicane where DC had blown in a poof of smoke and oil and MS managed to be less caught out and got better tractionGJ wrote:September 13th-
Italian GP 1998, M Schumacher won after a magnificent overtaking
SEPTEMBER 13th
1953. The scene of the first of F1's epic last lap frenzy finishes at Monza, with 5 cars running together into the last bend. Ascari and Farina were side by side. Ascari spun, Farina went on to the grass to avoid his teammate. Ascari was hit by Marimon, who had nowhere to go. In the confusion Fangio dived through the carnage to win the race. Farina rejoined the track to take second and Villoresi inherited third place.
1959....Ferrari entered five cars (for Brooks, Phil Hill, Gurney, Allison and Gendebien) for the Italian GP at Monza, as the team tried to help Tony Brooks in his battle with Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss (both Cooper Climax) to win the World Championship. The three shared the front row, Moss on Pole). Moss won the race in the Cooper Climax when he 'fooled' the others by not stopping to replace tyres at mid distance as was the habit. The Ferraris all stopped and ended up 2nd (Hill) 4th 5th and 6th. Brabham was 3rd, and poor old Brooks broke his engine at the start of the race.
1981....After a year away at Imola in 1980, the Italian GP was back at its spiritual home in Monza for 1981. First start ever for the Toleman team,(sponsored by the 'United Colours of Benetton') which in later years went on to become owned by and called Benetton and is now of course the Renault team.
1987, Not F1 but what the heck...... George Fury and Terry Shiel drove a Nissan Skyline to victory in the Sandown 500 at Sandown Park
1992. Brabham ran out of money and failed to turn up for the Italian GP. Nigel Mansell whinged that Williams were treating him badly and announced his retirement from F1 before the race.
1998. This might sound familiar but at the start of the Italian GP on this day that year Hakkinen was 7 points ahead of MS in the WDC, and McLaren were 23 points ahead of Ferrari in the WCC. By the end of the race MS was equal with Mika in the WDC on 80 points each and the gap in the WCC was down to 10 points. DC blew up whilst in a healthy lead, Mika was ahead of MS,and they arrived at the chicane to be caught out by DC's oil and related smoke, MS less so and he got ahead of Mika. Later Mika made an error and spun, rejoined but dropped down with brake problems and Irvine passed Mika. (Irvine had waved MS passed him earlier in the race). Ferrari ended up with their first 1-2 at Monza in 10 years

SEPTEMBER 14th ,
1905, The first Tourist Trophy, a regularity trial based on fuel consumption for autos and motorcycles, was won by John Napier in an Arrol-Johnston, on the Isle of Man, England
1944, Robert Benoist, 1927 World Champion and WWII French resistance leader, was executed by the *** at the Buchenwald concentration camp.
1950, Grand Prix driver, Masami Kuwashima was born in Japan
1969, After drivers Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme set fastest times in Saturday morning qualifying session for the next day's Bridgehampton, Can-Am race, Team McLaren goes water skiing instead of running afternoon qualifying session. No one betters their times.
1980, Imola, The Italian GP moved away from Monza in 1980, as a direct result of the multiple-car accident in 1978. Monza had done the necessary safety work but by then a contract had been agreed with Imola. As a result there was a non-championship Dino Ferrari GP in 1979 and the Italian GP in 1980.
Early in the race Villeneuve had a huge accident when he suffered a tyre failure at the corner before Tosa (now known as Villeneuve). The Ferrari hit the barriers nearly head-on and the car was destroyed, the main section of the monocoque bouncing back into the middle of the pack. Villeneuve escaped unhurt but the accident caused the retirement of Giacomelli who ran over some of the wreckage.
Jabouille and Arnoux had led the race but gradually Arnoux fell back and was overtaken by Jones (who had previously overtaken Rebaque). The Australian then chased after Jabouille and took second place on lap 29. The pair finished in that order and Piquet moved into the lead in the World Championship by just one point.
SEPTEMBER 15th
1881... In Brescia (Italy)...Birth of Ettore BUGATTI
1888, Antonio Ascari, Alfa Romeo racing great and father of Alberto Ascari, was born in Bonferro di Sorga, Italy.
1985, Spa, On the weekend between the Dutch and Italian GPs there was a World Sportscar Championship race at Spa. Stefan Bellof was sharing a Brun Porsche with Thierry Boutsen but collided with Jacky Ickx's Rothmans Porsche at Eau Rouge corner and was killed. Earlier Jonathan Palmer had crashed his Richard Lloyd Porsche heavily and broken his leg. Zakspeed did not bother going to Monza while Tyrrell decided not to replace Bellof immediately. Andrea de Cesaris had left Ligier and his place had been taken by Philippe Streiff while the new Haas Lola team appeared with a Hart-engined chassis being driven by Alan Jones.
Ayrton Senna took pole position in his Lotus-Renault with Keke Rosberg's Williams-Honda second fastest ahead of his team mate Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet (Brabham-BMW) was fourth with Alain Prost (McLaren-TAG) fifth and Elio de Angelis (Lotus-Renault) sixth. The top 10 was completed by Michele Alboreto (Ferrari), Patrick Tambay (Renault), Marc Surer (Brabham-BMW) and Stefan Johansson (Ferrari).

Racing was banned in Switzerland in 1955 following the disaster at Le Mans which claimed over 80 lives. It was therefore difficult for young Swiss drivers to make much of an impact in the 1970s but that did not stop Marc Surer. He started karting in 1972 and two years later raced to second place in the German Formula Vee Championship. In 1975 he moved on to European Formula Vee, did well and earned himself a drive in European Formula 3 in 1976. This led to him being recruited by Jochen Neerpasch to be a member of the BMW Junior Team, alongside Eddie Cheever and Manfred Winkelhock, racing initially in Group 5 touring cars and then in European Formula 2. He finished runner-up to Bruno Giacomelli in the European Championship in 1978 but then won the 1979 title in dominant fashion.
He made his Formula 1 debut for Ensign at the end of the 1979 season, then broke his ankles when he crashed an ATS at Kyalami the following spring while testing for the South African Grand Prix. He started 1981 by driving for Ensign and coming fourth in the Brazilian Grand Prix, but then suffered more leg injuries when he crashed - again at Kyalami. It was a tough blow but Surer fought back again and drove for Arrows from 1982 until the end of 1984.
He was hired to drive for the Brabham-BMW squad in 1985. That year he also won the Spa 24 Hours, sharing a Schnitzer BMW 635CSi with Gerhard Berger and Roberto Ravaglia. In 1986 he was transferred back to Arrows but his professional racing career ended soon afterwards when he crashed his own Ford RS200 on the Hessen Rally in Germany. The accident cost the life of his co-driver and Surer suffered terrible injuries and burns.
In 1988 however BMW took him on to be an instructor in its driver training programme and he started his career as a TV commentator with the DRS channel in Switzerland. In 1991 he was appointed head of BMW Motorsport and in 1994 and 1995 Johnny Cecotto and Jo Winkelhock won the German Super Touring Car Championship for BMW. In 1996 he began commentating for the German TV station DF1 and in 1997 became the host of his own programme on Swiss TV. He remains a TV presenter and racing school instructor.
