On this day in 1993, Reigning NASCAR Cup champion Alan Kulwicki is killed in a light plane crash near Bristol, Tennessee. He was just 38 years of age, and is still to this day the last owner/driver to win a championship. As a tribute the following day, his hauler took a lap of the speedway as it left the track, being shown the chequered flag one last time. His team ran a further 17 races that year with Jimmy Hensley driving for 15 of those, before handing the #7 over to Geoffrey Bodine, a close friend of Kulwicki’s.
