Alfonso de Portago real name (and funny driver names)

#1

Post by pilva »

According to www.motorsportmemorial.org , the real name of Alfonso de Portago (1928-1957) was:

don Alfonso Antonio Vicente Blas Angel Francisco Borgia Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton Carvajal y Are, grande de España, conde de Mejorada, conde de Pernía, marqués de Moratalla, 17th marqués de Portago y duque de Alagón

(the best part was "Cabeza de Vaca", which translates into "Cow Head")...

Well!!!... :o :o :o

 If some of you knows of weird and/or strange driver names, please post them here. (I´ve seen this in another thread, not necessarly on this forum). C´mon with this, guys!... :D
Greetings from Portugal.

Scott Speed comes to mind, but that's neither weird or strange, just plain cool. 8)

The only other F1 driver with a long name is Jonkheer Carel Pieter Anthonie Jan Hubertus Godin de Beaufort :P

Fon's actual name was just "Alfonso Antonio Vicente Eduardo Ángel Blas Francisco de Borja Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton".

The rest is basically a sort of title...like "Mr." or "Queen" or "King". :P

Grande de España = Some kind of high ranking nobility. Not sure of the exact translation.

Conde de Mejorada = Earl of Mejorada

Conde de Pernía = Earl of Pernía

17th Marqués de Portago = Marquis of Portago (I suppose Portago was a town somewhere. Marquis is again, to do with nobility - second in rank to a Duke, but higher ranking than an Earl.

Duque de Alagón = Duke Of Alagón.

There are drivers by the fairly amusing names of:

Jan de Vroom (same generation as de Portago) and Bernard de Dryver (Formula One in the late 1970s, never qualified for a race).

Ptracer, "Grande de España" means "Big of Spain", designating those people very notable in their country.

Again, from www.motorsportmemorial.org , his nationality was... English!!!...

On other page about him ( http://www.grandprix.com/gpe/drv-depalf.html ) it says he was born in London, grew up in France, but his nationality is Spanish... Quite a traveller!...

And you've also got Paddy Driver, the 1970s South African racer.

Well, Vassago, here comes the problem about the many country´s code page characters, mostly not coded by your own language keyboards.
What you meant is that his real name was "Albert François Rosenberg"...

Confused? I´ll explain: In latin countries, we have a char, which is the "ç" or the "Ç", which roughly translates into "ss".

So, his name could be spoken as this: "Albeer Franssoaa Rosenbergue".

These latin guys...

Grande de España = Some kind of high ranking nobility. Not sure of the exact translation.

-Grande de España translates as "Spain's Grandee" It is an old honorific tittle. It usually pass to the heirs.
-Even if born in London and spent most of his life abroad, Fon de Portago retained the Spanish nationality of his ancestors.

Monteiro's whole name is, ironically, Tiago Vagaroso Monteiro (Vagaroso means "Slow" in portuguese).

Another one is John Love, who came second at Kyalami 67.
