Speedway Definition

#1

Post by Jesper Hvid »

I am looking for an online dictionary definition of the noun which describes it in terms of the following factors: length, size, surface, shape, direction of travel, and geography.

It is not speedway as in a type of dirt track motorcycle racing, but a speedway.

What surprised me is that very short ovals like Martinsville are also caused speedways, even though you don't go very fast there compared to Talladega or Daytona.

Aren't they super-speedways, or have I pulled that out of my arse?

Tally is a super-speedway, but what's the difference really?

I found this on yahoo
A raceway and a speedway are basically the same thing. In the United States a raceway was historically a track used primarily for horse racing but with the advent of automobiles and automobile racing many horse racing tracks added or converted to auto racing. In today's time the term speedway and raceway are used interchangable.

There are several types of racetracks.

Super-speedway: A paved oval typically two miles in length or greater.

Speedway : A paved oval typically one mile to two miles in length.

Short Track : A paved oval of less than a mile.

Dirt Track : A dirt oval ranging in length of 1/4 mile to up to one mile.

Road Course : Purpose built paved racing circuit with left and right hand turns.

Street Course : Temporary street circuit typical built in urban areas but can include airports.

Drag Strip : Paved straight line track typically 1/8 or 1/4 of a mile in length.

I guess there are other types of tracks, but these are the most likely you will see in the United States.

exactly - next year they will be racing on the Nashville 'Superspeedway'.
I thought the 'Super' reference meant easily full throttle throughout, but apparently not so.

The use of 'speedway' 'superspeedway' and the like are not defined/sanctioned.

Thank you very much.

When I posted a wreck pic from Raceway Road Atlanta in American speedway crash photos topic, I was apparently correct.
