Biggest winning margins in F1

#1

Post by Cheeveer »

Motorsport.com had this feature today:

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/top- ... y/4788077/

But that is seemingly BS. They count laps, not time, and so the question is:

what is actually the biggest winning margin in F1 history?

I can on the top of my head count 2 races with bigger margin than Stewart at Montjuich: it is himself at the Nürburgring in 1968 (at 4 minutes, 3 seconds) and Jim Clark at Spa in 1963 (5 minutes, 14 seconds).

Any others?

Posting this having not yet read the article so apologies if they are mentioned there.

Not the largest winning gap but an often forgotten one was 1995 Australian GP at Adelaide, with Damon Hill winning from the Ligier of Olivier Panis by over 2 laps.

In terms of time wins then the 1958 Portugese GP is up there.... Stirling Moss in his Vanwall beat Mike Hawthorn (Ferrari) by 5 min 12.75 seconds. That was at Porto with its 7.5klm approx lap length... they both finished the full 50 laps.

That list is a complete cock-up, isn't it? They list Spain '69 as first, but show their #3 (France '62) to actually have a bigger margin. But if you check, their margins are a complete nonsense, too: Spain '69 was actually 3'52.8", France '62 was 4'32.9", and Britain '69 was actually only 2'07.4", and thus nowhere near the top ten, probably not even top twenty! Looks like they just said, "oh let's pick up some numbers out of thin air and produce an article, nobody will check the facts anyway."

Same with the victory of Moss at Pescara:
1 Stirling Moss 2:59:22.7
2 Juan Manuel Fangio +3:13.9
3 Harry Schell +6:46.8
4 Masten Gregory 8:16.5
5 Stuart Lewis-Evans +1 lap
6 Giorgio Scarlatti +1 lap
Brian Redman: "Mr. Fangio, how do you come so fast?" "More throttle, less brakes...."

Those victory margins are why I can't take the likes of Fangio seriously as an all time great. The best of a bunch of rich amateur enthusiasts, not necessarily the best in the world.

Just in, I now have the timing reports from San Marino 1985 and Australia 1995: De Angelis actually won by 2'03.262", and Hill by 2'53.193". Heaven knows how motorsport.com came up with their figures!!

You should always check the race report before posting a statement like that.

Pescara was a power circuit. Fangio put the Maserati on pole, but during the race his car was simply not fast enough to keep up with the Vanwall. He also hit a curbstone at one point and damaged his wheel, meaning a slow lap back to the pits to change it.

Jack Brabham's Cooper was so underpowered he qualified dead last.

You'd better left that uncommented, as a stand-alone stupidity. Moss, Fangio, Schell, Greory, Lewis-Evans and Scarlatti a bunch of rich amateurs. Yeah, right.
