Are you serious about that?
Schumacher could have also slowed and given Irvine 2nd place, giving him two extra points. Then Hakkinen and Irvine would have finished the championship on an equal 76 points. (I guess Hakkinen would still be champ though, with 5 wins to Irvine's 4?)

Yes, that is correct. I think it's more plausible that Schumacher (and Ferrari) didn't see the point of moving over when Häkkinen dominated that weekend anyhow. Better for Schumacher to get into the groove after his injury.

There was no reason for Schumi to yield to Irvine unless Hakkinen had issues or retired. Schumi did put on a good chase of Hakkinen in the early stages of the race but then got heavily baulked by Coulthard who was being lapped.
But I agree that Schumi didn't want Irvine to be champ as Schumi wanted to be the first Ferrari driver since Scheckter to collect the drivers championship trophy. Whether Schumi put in 50% effort, 75% or was in total support of Irvine at Suzuka that day we'll never truly know.

at least DC gave a good showing on how to lose a constructors championship that afternoon.

Could also say that Hakkinen blew that at San Marino when he crashed, or Italy when he spun out. The reality is you cannot say that one drivers result in one race of a 16 round championship was responsible, especially when 'the other driver' and team had their own fair share of nightmare days. They all contributed.
Bottom line is the whole team contrived to and had a part in losing the Constructors Championship.

While Hakkinen shot himself in the foot a couple of times, plus had reliability issues also, DC tried his best to halt Hakkinen's title charge as well. Remember that he spun his team mate at the second corner in Austria then played bumper cars with him into La Source at Spa.

Exactly. Even if Irvine finished 2nd then Hakkinen would have won the title. Irvine needed Schumacher to pass Hakkinen and I believe Der Altmeister flat out backed off from even trying. Suzuka has been historically one of Schumacher's best tracks and he laid a suspicious dud when it mattered a lot (for Irvine anyway).PTRACER wrote: ↑4 years agoAre you serious about that?

Mika made up for it in '00 with some marvellous performances though. Imagine he didn't have the mechanical failures early in the season - he'd have been a triple champ.

Rubbish. The only reason McLaren lost the Construcors title that year was the Malaysia scandal. In my records, I disregard the 1999 Ferrari title because of that balatant subterfuge. McLaren is and always has been the rightful 1999 Champion! Fuck Eccle$tone & Mo$ley, they ruined F 1 that day just to make some extra do$h, and they didn't even back then know how much they'd already made by milking F 1. Just a bunch of fat cats crying for some extra helpings, when they were already nearly busting their waistelines, and for all that crap F 1 went down the drain - THANK YOU VERY MUCH, assholes.Everso Biggyballies wrote: ↑4 years agoCould also say that Hakkinen blew that at San Marino when he crashed, or Italy when he spun out. Are you talking about the Bargeboard protest (which seemed to happen every other race) or Schumacher holding up the McLarens on track???
Seems like the Malaysia race was not one that sticks out in my mind for some huge controversy. Enlighten us...

The Ferraris were disqualified, and reinstated a week later for purely commercial reasons - the fear of low viewing figures for the next race. Sad to note that this no longer ranks as a "controversy".

I wouldn't be surprised if that was true. We were all saying 15 years ago that FIA = Ferrari International Assistance.Michael Ferner wrote: ↑4 years ago The Ferraris were disqualified, and reinstated a week later for purely commercial reasons - the fear of low viewing figures for the next race. Now...why don't you ask us that same question you asked over at Atlas?
