Lap of The Gods.

#1

Post by LegendsOf67 »

A month or two ago, I finally got my hands on a two-DVD set of Lap of The Gods. I had it on my motorsport film wishlist in my university days 18yrs ago believe it or not! I recall seeing a snippet of Depailler's lap in the wet around Montreal back then and being absolutely in awe of the man's freakish car control.

It took me a while to actually find where it came from; back then it was a VHS tape sold by Duke video. I've watched the lot twice now and while it looks dated (screen graphics, a younger Murrary Walker etc), it is really worth watching. Depailler's lap still gives me goosebumps. In fact, his and Eddie Cheever's laps around Detriot (also in the wet), I could watch for eternity. :jaw:

The late Chris Nixon and Terrific Stuff Videos really produced some wonderful films! One of my favourites from that stable is Racing the Silver Arrows.

The lap around Detroit should be remastered by PT (kind request).

I also have the DVD somewhere. I'm not if it's here in USA or in storage in England. I don't remember the Cheever laps around a wet Detroit. I'd be interested in seeing that.

Rip using Handbrake, or an equivalent program. Then upload to either megaupload or DailyMotion

Fantastic.

I can't see a contemporary F1 driver going out in that, or the teams allowing them to, or the stewards.

Depailler did not even come close to missing an apex. Brilliant in conditions that would have today's drivers running for their motor homes.

Depailler was a class act in the rain. (* in dry conditions too)

I love that in these video Depailler does the opposite of everyone else. Each driver drives around carefully and slowly because the camera and rig where huge and unstable. Depailler just says ‘sod it’ and drives like he would always do. The videos of him at Montreal, Monaco (in the P34) and Long Beach are amazing.

This is the rig...
