Detroit is best when viewed from the rear view mirror as you drive away from it.

thanks Paul.

however you look at it, Detroit was on the calendar far longer than many other US venues (especially the street tracks).
as far as I know, it was Ford that pumped huge amounts of money it.

today that would be unlikely, as the downtown course runs around the General Motors Renaissance Center - a fierce competitor of Ford.

Ford did very recently buy this beautiful former railway station, which should be good for the city

Today it would be unlikely because following on from its $20 billion bankruptcy filing a few years ago the city has become a bit of a ghost town, with a population down from nearly 2 million to now nearer 600,000

Re the railway station, look at the state of it. Its a ruin, just like tens of thousands of other buildings left to fester. No doubt bought for the land at a giveaway price. Ford are hardly flush with cash these days.

Nothing like a Grand Prix will ever return to Detroit. Not in any of our lifetimes anyway.
The city of Detroit, Michigan, filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy on July 18, 2013. It is the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in U.S. history by debt, estimated at $20 billion. Detroit is also the largest city by population in the U.S. history to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, more than twice as large as Stockton, California, which filed in 2012. While Detroit’s population had declined from a peak of 1.8 million , its July 2013 population was reported by The New York Times as a city of “less than 700,000 people, as well as to tens of thousands of abandoned buildings, vacant lots and unlit streets.”

also no word on a possible extension of the Indycar race at Belle Isle. Contract ran out this year and no news about a possible renewal.

truth be said though, the city attracted F1 because it wanted to work on its image (copying what Long Beach California did).

Detroit is provisional on the IMSA schedule for next year, I believe it's down to a council vote as to whether or not it runs past this year.

Actually, I quite liked the track. It always seemed to produce interesting races, much better ones than Monaco, for example. Monaco really is a shitty track.

well, it was a car breaker and required 100% concentration. Plus, you could actually force your way past unlike Monaco.
