Number 3 was not a lucky number for Lorenzo. The incident lasted 3 seconds, Lorenzo remained in the flames for 3 minutes, 3 meters from the sea. And he still lived 3 days.

Ferrari skipped Monaco in '68; did Bandini's accident the previous year have anything to do with it? They had a good car and 2 great drivers, it seems odd.

Yes. Ferrari was still convinced the safety measures done by Monaco were not enough.

I didn't find this picture anywhere so I suppose it is new here.

Image

It was clearly taken a fraction of time before the collision...

What do you think about it?

I remember an old discussion, about that one. Maybe it's still here.

He must have had the Tunnel vision Senna once spoke about after racing at Monaco
because he is looking toward the next part of the chicane not the part he's on :rip:

The position of his head looks like not natural. It seems he is looking at his right side, not beyond the chicane

This is exactly what I noticed too. I have seen dozens of pictures of drivers going through that chicane and in no one the driver looks like that.

For refence here are some other pictures of Bandini himself:

Image Image Image

Someone might say that its already obvious something went wrong otherwise he wouldn't have crahed. But according to me that pictures shows us 2 important things:

1. Bandini's body out of position means the car is not handling right, maybe he had that little oversteer, maybe the gearbox got stuck or maybe he was simply going too fast trying to reach Hulme, unfortunately we still cannot know that.
2. Bandini is clearly looking at the escape route, not at the road as usual, probably considering if he still has time to go that way.

Image

What I think is that that picture completely wipes away the exhausted driver theory, because Bandini looks pretty aware of what is going to happen.

These are my 2 cents on this, if the picture was already discussed here, I am curious to know what was the conclusions at the time.

It could just be a bit of distortion, but is that right front looking like coming off the rim?

I think it is just an illusion created by the color and design of the rim. Look at these other pictures from Bandini himself and also Amon:

If you zoom in the Amon one looks even more evident, so I suppose it is just the way the Ferrari's tyres worked.
