Bottom post of the previous page:

EDIT: Sandeep, I noticed you deleted your post. If you're still having problems, I've already written this :haha:

Presumably if uTorrent works, it means you torrent. Perhaps you picked up a virus. First try this:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories, right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. ...
2. At the command prompt type: netsh winsock reset catalog and press [Enter].
3. Next type: netsh int ip reset reset.log and press [Enter].
4. Restart your computer

If this gets you an internet connection, then download and run this tool. If not, then find a way to get this on your computer (like via memory stick from another PC):

Oh dear, I was hoping I culled it in time. Thank you Paul but all I had to do was turn the router off and on.

So if my power supply went bang to such an extent that a fuse popped, how likely is it that any components have survived?

I'm afraid that my entire computer short-circuited itself to bits. It doesn't start, but a green light is on the motherboard at least. :sorrow:

Have you still got the broken power supply in it?? If so, take it out and throw it away. Sometimes they can short the insides of the computer but they also have built-in protection themselves. The only way to find out is to put in another PSU.

It went pop, and a fuse went. When I switched the power on, a green light came on on the motherboard, but it didn't boot. A hope it's nothing more than the PSU. Will get a new one tomorrow. It was on an old PSU though.

Had a few PSU failures, but none of them were fatal.

Sounds pretty standard. I think I only ever saw one PSU blow and take the rest of the computer with it, but that had flames shoot out the back. And I see PSUs blowing all the time. So you should be fine. Getting the green motherboard light and no power is pretty standard for PSU failure.

Bought a new PSU, fitted it, it booted - everything is fine now. Relief.

It really frustrates me these new browsers, on both this tablet and my 'race' PC I have all old original stuff, the browsers skip along, super fast, no problems at all, maybe the occasional crash on a new style site, but if that happens I just go to the laptop which has all the modern browsers on.

Yes, the laptop that has up to date chrome and Firefox on, that's so slow and FUBAR that in the time it takes either chrome or Firefox to open, I could have opened the site, read it's entire contents on the tablet, and made a cup of tea.

My other 'racing' PC is the same (which is the xp machine with a second boot able hard drive) it has win7 on and everything up to date, and is as slow as a snail.

No not technical support, but I share your frustration.

The system clock on my computer has been broken for a while - it just repeats the same hour so I have to reset it every day to make websites appear properly, etc. Is there any solution to this, or is it permanent CPU or motherboard damage?

Perhaps I am about to ask for something impossible, but here goes.

I used to play the game Monaco Grand Prix 2 back in the day. For those who don't know it, it is a non-licensed F1 game depicting the 1997 F1 season and was made for Win95.
For years I had it running on Win98 and it was ace, for me still the best F1 game ever, also because it was so easy to edit cars and track appearance.

My old Win98 pc has long since gone to the pc Walhalla and I have been trying ever since to get MGP working on my old WinXP laptop, but so far without much success. The game works fine, but runs waaaaaay to fast. It is like Usain Bolt strapped to a Saturn V. I have been trying some tricks to slow my machine down, but my knowledge is insufficient to make any promising headway.
Now, a few weeks ago I fired up the old laptop again and found it had been in standbymode for a while. I installed MGP and it worked FINE. No glitches, no ultrafast movements, it was perfect. So the game and machine CAN work fine.
I shut down the laptop to try again the next day, but then found it was back to the old ultrafast movements.

I am not sure why it is so fast, but I think it may have something to do with processor speed. I tried disabling DirectX acceleration (which worked for Wing Commander IV), but that didn't solve the problem.
I tried running CPU Killer, but that just makes everything so juddery it is impossible to play the game.
So, to my question: Is there another way of slowing an old XP laptop down?
