Cheeveer wrote:How does a portable harddrive work? Is it like a huge USB-memory or can you use it to install games and d/l stuff onto it?
Firstly, lets clarify something.

A USB flash Drive:
A portable hard drive that's basically non-stable. It doesnt have the power to change the data on it's own, so it's only way of changing/deleting contents on it, is to have the information flashed (A term that makes it easier to understand). If the device is dropped, it'll most likely survive & will live to fight another day. Not suseptable to to many issues.

A portable hard drive:
Like, a flash drive, it holds data. However, with the portable hard drive, it has a magnetic disk inside that holds the data. It's pretty much like the hard drive in your computer, except, it's portable.

Portable hard drive's hold alot more data than a flash drive, & overall are not that bad value for money, equating to $1 per Gigabite. Problem is that if the hard drive falls, or sustains heavy damage it will cause a 'head crash'. This basically means all data will be lost, & the device will be useless, pretty much meaning you have to throw it away.

Downloading stuff to them is okay, but there are some issues that arise. If you have say, Getright which records the download path & where the download will go to, & you start at one machine, & then go to another one to continue, you can have problems, such as a different drive letter/number being assigned, & then the download crapping up because paths are wrong for the directory which it's saving stuff to.

Also, when you want to format it, make sure you choose NTFS (New Technology File System [I beleive that's what it's called]) over FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32Bits) because NTFS lets files be any size, where as FAT32 craps up when they are 4Gig or over (Meaning it's just not gonna happen)

I have 4 250GB Iomega USB hard drives and they're great. They run on household electrical current and connect to your PC via USB cable. Mine run at 7200RPM and get a little warm, but I'd rather have that over the decrease in performance of a slower running system. Dollar for dollar(or whatever money system you use) it's quite a bit cheaper than purchasing CDs and DVDs for mass storage. I've never tried to run a game from them, but I don't see why it wouldn't work, other than the data rate not being fast enough through the USB connection.

This is what I have:

Will buy soon a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 MCE capture card, so I can finally capture stuff from TV. Been without a VCR (recording) for 4 years now, altough I bought a VCR (no recording, just playing) from my uncle for 5 euro, which I use to capture from VHS to DVD

If anyone still needs a cheap and good VHS>DVD encoder, go for the Plextor ConvertX M402U. Awesome stuff.

Running 320GB in total here, but most stuff I burn directly to DVD.

1x Maxtor 80GB (main disk, only using 10GB of it for programs)
1x Maxtor 250GB (2nd disk, download disk and backup disk. When I reinstall, I can still use this one, so I dont need to format it.)

Shame 10000rpm HD's are still so expensive here, they seem to be quite good.

Just reading through some of the reviews on Gamespot, & this one caught my attention:

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing
Rating: 1/10 (abysmal)
Link: http://au.gamespot.com/pc/driving/bigri ... id=6086528

"It is so disturbingly bad that even its budget price tag seems like a slap in the face"

If your after a laugh, take a look at the link, & some of the screen shots.... :wow: :haha:

I was also looking at the 360, & I saw BomberMan on it. As soon as I saw it, I thought WTF?? I can't beleive they butcherd it so badly?!?!?!

Still, if it helps keep the company alive, I spose it's for the best.

My computer has been running quite slow of late, the past few months in fact. So, I've decided to upgrade the memory. It's currently 256MB-RAM, but I'll be upgrading it to 1GB-RAM (2x 512MB) so it should bring things back upto speed. After this, my computer wont be extremely bad:

1GB-RAM
P4 2.36GHZ
50GB Hard drive + Others

I'll probably look at getting a Core Duo 2, late 2008, early 2009 when they've come down in price. Most likely, from Dell.com.au

Some random mumblings from else where, I thought I'd post here as they're somewhat interesting!
-> AMD plans a midyear introduction of the first products in its quad-core Opteron family, code-named 'Barcelona.' The company claims it will deliver an estimated 40 percent performance advantage over "the competition"

-> Intel is tipped to trim between 20 and 40 percent from the prices of several Core 2 Duo chips, including the Q6600 quad-core model and introduce its 'Penryn' family, which takes the Core 2 and Xeon CPUs to the 45mn process and speeds in excess of 3GHz.

-> Intel's 'Nehalem' family (to be shipped in 2008), designed from the outset for 45nm implementation with the potential for up to eight cores on one chip
This competitions good for bringing prices down, but I can't help but feel I'm going to be left behind. I still like to think that an A:/ Drive, Cd/Dvd burner-rom, P4, & broadband is sufficient enough.

Ditto! My system is even weaker than yours... P4 1.7GHz, 1GB 266MHz DDR RAM, 2x40GB hard drives, one of which is a 5400rpm Fujitsu, the kind that had over 30% failure rate back in 2001. I have a floppy drive as well! At least the graphics card is a 128MB 9600 Pro. Seeing things advance so fast (how many cores you said???) is making me feel depressed too.

So, I've had enough of my current computers BS, & have been looking to purchase another computer, but not system (So, just the box part).

I've pretty much narrowed down the choice to 2 system, both being offered by the one person/business:

1.
# Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz (Socket 775)
# All-In-One Micro ATX Motherboard
# Massive 2GB DDR2 RAM
# Huge 250GB Hard Disk Drive
# 18X Dual Layer DVD Writer
# Black & Silver ATX case w/ PSU
# 12 Months Warranty

Price: $749AUD / 316.28GBP / 630.14USD / 466.68EUR

The price is actually pretty good. All of the comparable ones are around $200-$400AUD more expensive, so this is a pretty good deal.

2.
# Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz (Socket 775)
# All-In-One Micro ATX Motherboard
# Massive 2GB DDR2 RAM
# Huge 250GB Hard Disk Drive
# 18X Dual Layer DVD Writer
# nVidia GeForce 8500GT PCI-Ex16 Graphic Card (Direct X10)
# Black & Silver ATX case w/ PSU
# 12 Months Warranty

Price: $849AUD /358.91GBP / 715.17USD / 529.67EUR

This one's also pretty good, but comes with the nVidia GeForce Graphics card that can support DX10, so I'm not to sure which one I shall get. It's defiantly one or other!!

Comments/Advice???

Please please please please PLEASE do not under ANY circumstances get a Dell!

I work in a computer repair shop and we see more Dells than any other machine. The most common problem is hard drive failure, but we do see motherboard failures quite regularly too.

Now, let's talk computers...what do you use a computer for? Internet browsing and email is obvious, but what else? Games? Video editing? etc.

I'll second the NO for a Dell. I bought one as my first PC, only because I didn't know any better. Once in a while, the HD makes this low volume electric chair sound. I only use it for Folding and Porn, now. The Mac does everything else. Course it would probably do Folding and Porn better, but anyway.

Nope, I enjoy Live porn! The sicko came over MSN when some brain damaged idiot lost his own PC during a Hack-Attack! I wonder how many terminals he has infected?
Hmmm, that could be the reason why my grandma recieved some Black Metal lately!
