Grand Prix 3 on Windows 7/10 Guide (Incl. game download)

I'm having great fun with this, so I wrote a little guide on how to get it going on a modern PC as no one seems to have an answer. In case you don't have the disc anymore, or you never owned this game, read on.

1. Download the full original game here: http://www.oldpcgaming.net/grand-prix-iii/

2. Either burn the ISO to a CD using some burning software (all basic software should handle ISO files), or use an ISO mounting software to mount it as a virtual disc.

3. Install the game as per normal. Do not install DirectX7, it will not work.

4. Update the game to GP3 1.13 and put the NOCD patch into the GP3 folder. Downloads here: http://www.grandprixgames.org/read.php?50,699633

The 1.13 update is the bigger of the two files, so double click on it and run that first, then copy/paste the NOCD patch into the C:\Program Files\Microprose\GP3 folder

5. See the next post to get it working in Windows 7 and 10!

Running the game

1. Do not try to run GP3 at this point. If you try to load GP3, you will most likely see corrupt menus, or even just a black screen.

2. Download the latest version of dgvoodoo2 (as of June 2016, it's v2.52)
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2.html

3. From this download, copy dgvoodoosetup.exe into your GP3 folder.

4. Then, also from the dgvoodoo zip, copy the three DLL files which are in the MS folder into the GP3 folder. These will be labelled DDraw.dll, D3D8.dll and D3DImm.dll

5. Run dgvoodoosetup.exe from within the GP3 folder. Go to the DirectX tab, make sure the following settings are in place:
Videocard: dgvoodoo Virtual 3D Accelerator Card
VRAM: 1024MB

6. Make sure the following checkboxes are ticked: No mipmapping; Fast video memory access; Application controlled fullscreen/windowed state

7. Uncheck anything I haven't mentioned. You may now close the dgvoodoosetup program, it does not need to run anymore.

8. Within GP3, you should be able to set the resolution to 1280x1024 if you have a very modern, very fast computer. If not, reduce the resolution lower to suit. I have a computer that was average/fast in 2009 and it struggles above 1024x768. The first corner is especially slow FPS if I'm at the back of the grid, after that it's fine. Perhaps someone with a faster PC can verify whether they have any better performance. Remember this essentially a DirectX wrapper/emulator. The reason this game is slow out of the box on Windows 10 is because standard DirectX7 games are not supported anymore.

Modding the game

1. I like the 1998 season and there is no other game which replicates it so nicely. The PSX game is ugh. The best 1998 mod available by far is on the EMAC website here:
http://emac.sportplanet.emacberry.com/g ... ginal.html

2. Part 1 and Part 2 of the mod will need to be loaded into the game using GP3 Edit. This program may be found here, however I won't write a guide on how to use it. Ask if you need help:
http://www.grandprixgames.org/read.php?41,1016829

3. If you want to also run the updated car shape, then download the latest version of GPxPatch here. GPxPatch is highly recommended anyway and you should definitely load the game using that every time:

4. **Fix for purple stripes on the tyres here: http://www.grandprixgames.org/read.php?1,1097754

I've followed the steps yet I get a blank screen when I start the game. Not sure what I've done wrong. I will probably uninstall everything and start again.

thanks for all the instructions Paul. Sadly, Norton deletes everything concerning that voodoo thing.

and I get this screen, which is not quite how I remember GP3...

Looks like some sort of SBS3D rendering gone wrong.
I am very sorry if you find my posts long and boring, I like to type and often go off on a tangent.
If this is the case, you may click here to solve the problem, or alternatively here too.
