Low- versus High-Rake

#1

Post by Ruslan »

A worthwhile article on the new rule changes and how they came about and their impact on low-rake versus high-rake designs.

https://www.grandprix.com/news/aston-ma ... anges.html

Highlights:
1. This issue was flagged to FIA.
2. Three teams voted against it.
3. It was passed under safety regs.
4. I gather (this is not in the article) that car designs were otherwise frozen.

Did Ross Brawn actually know he was changing the regulations to disadvantage the Mercedes and Aston Martin teams?

Well, the issue has re-surfaced:

https://www.grandprix.com/news/rival-te ... hreat.html

"Aston Martin boss Otmar Szafnauer suspects the changes were designed specifically to tackle Mercedes' utter dominance of the sport...when asked if legal action is possible, Szafnauer hinted that he is concerned that the rule changes may have been instigated by Liberty Media - not the rule-making FIA."

Its the FIA that makes the rules. Not the teams. They could build a high rake car.

Not even Ferrari has bitched this much.

Typical Stroll mentality.

Seems something of a red herring to me. If Perez was qualifying it instead of vettel today they'd be pretty much where they were last season .

Some effect , but 1 second is clearly nonsense

It's really simple to me. The rear floor was creating too much downforce. It doesn't have anything to do with how high your rake is.

They could have taken a little off the wings though, looks like we are back to 2020 downforce levels already.

Those front wings are a bugbear of mine. Ridiculous size and number of separate elements that are liable to shatter and hit drivers

Make the floors totally flat too

.... yeah the wings are a thing I have hated ever since they ruled the size must be wider than the front wheelbase. Hideous things they have developed intowith all the vanes and shit. Not to mention the cost which one of the team principals said was in the region of $ 250,000 each. Yes thats not a typo. $250,000 each to produce. Bloody crazy. And they knock them off and replace them like there is no tomorrow.

A safety decision to reduce wheel to wheel contact I guess?

I think it all started as a way to give the cars more 'front end' ie grip to be able to follow cars in the 'dirty air' close enough to be able to pass. That didnt work to well, so they kept the ugly noses and gave us DRS as well to counter the diffiult to get close enough to pass bullshit.

Would have made sense if to prevent front wheel / rear wheel contact but that's just silly.

Crazy idea, but running high ride heights at the rear, with circuits which undulate and crest so much, can cause rear end instability...Flatter circuits will benefit them again.
