Stop Press:
Mongol expat centre opens in Emilia Romagna. Yes its true.

I also looked up to see if this Emilia Romagna person may have been a mongol to find out it is not a person. No it is a region named after a road. But the road was partially named after a person.
The name Emilia-Romagna is a legacy of Ancient Rome. Emilia derives from the via Aemilia, the Roman road connecting Piacenza to Rimini, completed in 187 BC and named after the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. Romagna derives from Romània, the name of the Eastern Roman Empire applied to Ravenna by the Lombards when the western Empire had ceased to exist and Ravenna was an outpost of the east (540–751).
It seems the Mongols were going to invade the region, but once Genghis died, his son did a bit of raping and pillging but ultimately he also died and the leftovers got homesick and didnt like the weather.Thats the abbreviated version.....

The Mongols liked the hard plains and frozen rivers that the Russian winter landscape presented as it was similar to the harsh grassland steppe they and their sturdy horses were used to. So the Mongols did the Middle East over, then Russia, all the 'stan lot (Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan etc), sorted the Bashkirs and Bulgars along the way. They had a ball raping and pillaging Ryazan, torched Moscow, hit Poland, marching through Bohemia and Moravia and then attacking Hungary, while another headed south and attacked Transylvania, Moldavia, and Walachia. Hungary was selected as a primary target because of its grasslands, which the Mongols considered a perfect base for their horses from where they could then attack western Europe. After the battle, the Mongol warriors were said to have filled nine sacks with their favourite trophy, the ears of their victims.

Image
The Mongols pursue King Bela IV

King Bela might have commanded one of the best armies in Europe but he had other problems besides the Mongols as many of his disgruntled barons had questionable loyalty to the crown. Another problem was rampaging Polovtsians who had fled the Mongol onslaught further east and were now raiding at will in Hungarian lands. In the event, Bela's army was roundly defeated on 10-11 April at the Battle of Mohi (modern Muhi) on the Sajo river after the Mongol commander Subutai (c. 1175-1248 CE) had his men cross a pontoon bridge and move through a swamp area to outflank the Hungarians. At the same time, Mongol catapults bombarded the enemy from the opposite bank of the river. Bela IV fled to the safety of Pressburg (Bratislava) and then Croatia. The Mongol armies, meanwhile, marched on relentlessly and they all met up on the Danube river in the first week of April. In 1241 CE. Buda and Pest were both sacked and looted, the latter on Christmas Day of all days,

Then Ogedi Ghan (son of Genghis) died, the grasslands of Hungary turned out to be not quite sufficient to maintain a large Mongol army indefinitely. There were also rivalries between the Mongol leaders and now that Ogedei was dead no single leader emerged.

Spring arrived and the Mongol army finally turned around and withdrew back to north of the Black Sea. They had all the sacks of ears they could carry and went home to argue amongst themselves.

So Emilia Romagna was saved from the Mongols.

Where is this Emilia Romagna?

A picture tells a thousand words.

Is Imola in Emilia Romagna?
Yes.

I like fancy Grand Prix names! And historical regions with double names! :whistling:

But it's better Imola is located in Emilia Romagna and not Friuli Venezia Giulia :haha:

If you right click the video on youtube you want to embed, copy the video link URL, then paste it into the post reply box here. Then delete the youtu.be/ prefix and add the youtube tags to what is left so you end up with[ youtube]link less the YTbit[/youtube]. (without the space I left so it would show)
Hope that makes sense. :dunno:

Random Italian trivia...

Tennis player Camila Giorgi said if she wasn't a tennis player, she'd like to be an F1 driver! She comes from Macerata - ca. 200 km south of Imola. Ayrton Senna is her idol.

I'd take Camila over the Mongols every day ;)

I dont think Wimbledon organisers would approve of her on court attire! Although all they say is 'outfits must be all white'..... :suspicious:

Giorgi is widely considered as having the shortest skirts on WTA tour. And they are designed by her mother!
