Bottom post of the previous page:

Again @Antonov: Laptimes don't say anything in Test days. We never know how much fuel they had on board or what the test strategies were.

At some moment Russell was testing pitlane speeds. 120kmh, 240kmh, 200kmh... Set the speed and check if the car runs that speed continuously.

Schumacher had reliability issues and lost most of his Monday session whilst they changed gearboxes so he ended up with half a race less mileage.

As has been said we dont know fuel loads used or what programmes drivers were on.

What we do know is that is the last day when the fastest times were set, Schumacher only used the C3 medium, whereas Mazepin was using the much faster soft compound. So in real terms I guess despite the benefit of the faster track conditions and softer rubber, he he should have been faster by more than he was.

Mazepin hardly set the time sheets on fire..... even with soft rubber. Other than MS he beat Latifi, who did not run on the by far faster last day, and Vettel who had a very troubled and reliability affected test. Oh and Nissany, who did a few laps on the first day.

And finally: It is a public secret that the Haas will not be updated the whole season!!! So this is it. The car of March 14th. That is the car they will run the whole season. A totally lost year for both drivers.

So why are they there? Schumacher is a Ferrari charge, yet they did not bump Giovanazzi at Alfa for him. Does this mean that Ferrari isn’t that impressed with him but felt they had to place him somewhere?

I have not ruled out that Team Haas will not become Team Mazepin next year. They already have the Russian flag on the front wing.

True enough. Nice that we are being kept guessing anyway.

Mazepin ran C5 tires. The softest compound. Maybe even in qualification mode.

I see Tsunoda was activating his drs early, explains the standout times somewhat.

Still credit to him for seeking to exploit any advantage

A bit surprised that Haas weren't running a Prost special.

Or maybe they were. In which case, oh dear.

I think from now on Haas will be known as Team O'Dear. :haha:

As an interim before it becomes Team Marzipan. :sarcasm:

I would say Red Bull and Mercedes on top, ahead of AlphaTauri and McLaren, closely followed by Alpine and Ferrari, then Aston Martin with Alfa Romeo, Williams and Haas a step behind them. The Ferrari engines have obviously picked up a bit, but then the others have not stood still..... that could make life uncomfortable for Williams in terms of Alfa, and on odd days perhaps Haas if their drivers get it together and get through the early laps.
Im equally sure that Mercedes will be the one team to have picked up more than others by the time we get to qualy in Bahrain. I am hoping that it will be closer at the top though this year and that the rest might be a little closer.

Watched the in car video of Tsunoda’s lap on YouTube. I’m not one to judge, but it did not look that clean.

Well the start/finish line is quite early up on the straight so I don't think turning on the DRS early gave him more than for a max 0.2s gain. He was very quick in the first two sectors.

In regards to testing and I see it every year - times don't matter. But year in year out it pretty much plays out true to form. To totally understand what is going one needs to read all the information not just the raw times. i.e. What tyres were the drivers on? e.g. Tsunoda was on the fastest tyre compared to some of those others up top. What were the useful laps out of the total number of laps? e.g. Hence why McLaren's quality laps are more important than Mercedes' problematic laps. What were the fuel loads is always an unknown but can be surmised. Of course we only have one venue this year to see cars and drivers go head to head, and we still have a couple of weeks for teams to change parts and upgrade, but the Mercedes does look like a handful at the moment.

Times don't matter etc, hmmmm . Not totally true.

The long run times for Merc last year proved pretty accurate for their advantage over the field.

I'm saying that beating last year's pole time in what are supposed to be cars with less downforce is pretty impressive by the red bull teams. Admittedly there may be questions about drs use and track limits.

Actually they didnt (beat last year's pole time)..... by a margin of near enough 1.7 seconds. In fact the top half of the grid last year were all faster than Max's fastest test time. They were way inside last years fastest race lap, but these guys in testing were on full qualy sims with the questionable DRS and track limit issues. (Fastest race lap was a 32 something.)

Max's fastest test time was a 1:28.960
Lewis got pole last year with a 1:27.264

In fact lets throw in the qualifying times by team last year.... Only Ferrari Williams Alfa and Haas were slower than the time Max set in testing.

Mercedes – 1:27.264
Red Bull – 1:27.678
Racing Point (now Aston Martin) – 1:28.332
Renault (now Alpine) – 1:28.417
AlphaTauri – 1:28.448
McLaren – 1:28.542
Ferrari – 1:29.137
Williams – 1:29.234
Alfa Romeo – 1:29.491
Haas – 1:30.111

It will be interesting to see what the qualy times are next weekend and how they compare to last year and indeed this years testing. Then all the sandbags will be out and modes turned up to the max, plus they will have further updates and development from what they found in testing.

Just sayin'.....
