Red Bull - .... Red Bull ? / an engine story
So, more and more stories surfacing of Red Bull building its own power unit as of 2022.
I wonder if Tsunoda is perhaps also a bargaining chip so that Red Bull keeps Honda input - certainly in the early fases of the transition.
It would be a bit like Williams 1998 I assume: the engines being branded 'Mechachrome' while in fact they were Renault engines with a few optimalisations here and there.
With Mercedes being firm that it is not going to deliver engines to Red Bull, and Ferrari unlikely to do so, only Renault remains as an alternative. I can still see it happening if the 'Red Bull engine' doesn't materialise, but it is plan B.

This whole Red Bull possibly continuing in house with the Honda project has already been an ongoing discussion, and in fact takes up most of the 6 pages in the Honda quitting F1 thread.

Rent a quote has been saying they can do their own engines for the new rules, which I'm sure is based on operating the Honda engine for experience.

Indeed, the easy option for them. Renault say they will supply if required. Mercedes said they wont / cant from a capacity pov. (They already have 4, McLaren, Racing Point, Williams and themselves. I think there is a limit of 3 customer engine contracts from the. FIA anyway. Ferrari have also said no with a maybe if they (Red Bull) commit early enough for them to plan it logistically. But then why would anyone want a Ferrari engine based on last years engine. However Ferrari are introducing a new engine somehow. I dont fully understand how given the engine freeze for next year, unless there is a loophole if they have it all done by the end of this year ie 2020.

Yes. The more interesting question is will Formula One exist in 2060?

I gather they are going with the re-badged Honda, I suspect for aerodynamics reasons. They may regret that decision.

Certainly the difficult option, but I suspect Honda are being honourable with the transfer of IP and help with the project, no doubt boosted by the fact that Tsunoda is onboard with the team (albeit Alpha Tauri at this stage). I am sure some of the people from Honda involved with the F1 engine product will still be involved and no doubt still on the Honda payroll to assist with budget caps. (Having said that I seem to recall that engine suppliers ie Merc Ferrari Renault and maybe RBR have a freedom within the salary caps to facilitate that.

Yes, engines are not under the budget cap. Now they may implement a separate budget cap for engines in another year or two. Right now their cost is controlled by other regulations, including tokens.Everso Biggyballies wrote: ↑3 years agoCertainly the difficult option, but I suspect Honda are being honourable with the transfer of IP and help with the project, no doubt boosted by the fact that Tsunoda is onboard with the team (albeit Alpha Tauri at this stage).
