Who is the biggest underachiever so far?
I'm bored and the only way to heal the ever growing darkness in my soul brought on by another year of Mercedes dominance is to make polls on forums and browsing the deep web in search for kidneys to flog on the local flea market for shits and giggles.
So here's another poll. Who is the biggest underachiever so far? And there is a fair few to choose from.
Alex Albon
Getting absolutely trashed to bits by Max and the only thing that's keeping him fourth in the WDC is the Ferraris being as quick as a lawn mover. Meanwhile Gasly is tearing up the field (relatively speaking) in the AT, a car obviously better suited to his preferences.
Sebastian Vettel
It's a dreary season for the Prancing Donkey (Which I will continue to call them until they get their shit together again) but even so, Leclerc has been able to make the most of the few opportunities to score a decent points haul. Vettel is not at home with the SF1000 and it's even worse when they have to shave downforce.
Valtteri Bottas
Allright, no one expected him to challenge for the title. But being behind Verstappen in the points haul in the same car that Lewis is driving circles around the rest of the field in week in and week out isn't pretty. Granted he's just keeping the seat warm for whenever Mercedes decides that Russel is ready to move up.
Kimi Raikkönen
I can't see Kimi racing in 2021. The Alfa got struck by the Ferrari engine nerf and one has to wonder if Kimi is having fun at all these days.
Antonio Giovanazzi
Same as Kimi, he's hampered by the car, so it's difficult to judge his pace. But one has to wonder how long he'll be around.
Kevin Magnussen
He has a point to his credit this season. But other than that, his performances are about as noteworthy as the Haas livery is interesting. Which conveniently brings me to...
Romain Grosjean
...this guy.
Daniil Kvyat
18 points for Gasly, two for Kvyat. One has to think he has to be in danger of getting the boot sooner rather than later.
Nicolas Latifi
Not that no one ever really expected anything from this guy in the first place.

I voted Grosjean. A complete waste of space in an F1 car. Has been for a long time.
I think Albon is a good racer and better than his results show. Too often Red Bull have fucked his strategy up, pitting him into traffic or just at odd times as they use him as fodder to maximise Max's strategy.... pitting him to check his tyre wear so they can decide what to do with Max etc.
Yes Max is out-pacing him but Max is a bit of an anomaly and even Danny Ric struggled
Kimi has i think driven the wheels off the Alfa and maximised its potential. He has been the only Alfa to get dragged into Q2 and at Spa he was the highest placed Ferrari powered car. He was also the Ferrari powered driver who had more laps in the points than even Leclerc. 2021? I think he will walk. Im sure he cant enjoy driving arount scratching for a point and options are limited. He has said how much he has enjoyed spending more time with his growing family this year with no flyaways.
Latifi. No comment really, as he was never going to shine.... but he has been closer to George than I expected. And he pays the bills.
Kvyat. I think he must be on dodgy ground. He has been pretty invisible ll year and the car is better than he makes it look.
KMag. Jury is a bit out on him. He does shine on occasions. But he fucks up a lot.
Gio. Difficult to judge but he seems to have been fairly invisible and I had expected more from him.
Bottas. Cant believe he was leading the championship. Like Albon with Max he has a lot to match, but he has had his chance. I guess he is a good #2 in the mould of Rubens.
Vettel. RETIRE ALREADY.

Maybe you should have an “all of the above” button for your poll.

Wish granted. Apparently it reset the four votes already cast.
So I guess I'm the biggest plonker of them all.

Lance Stroll.
That car was capable of a podium at Silverstone after the Merc tyre issues, as Hulk was showing with his pace.

OK...I voted for them all, but there are some differences:
Clearly does not belong in F1:
Niklas Latifi
Under motivated and consistently underperforming, and has been for a while:
Kimi Raikkönen
Not that bad, but simply do not measure up (listed from first to last how I rate them):
Valtteri Bottas
Alex Albon
Kevin Magnussen
Antonio Giovanazzi
Has some real speed, but lack consistency:
Romain Grosjean
Daniil Kvyat
In a perfect car, on a perfect day, in a perfect mood, can still crank out top-notch performances:
Sebastian Vettel
Anyhow, they will probably almost all be gone from F1 over the next year or two I suspect.
Now, someone mentioned Lance Stroll. He is having his best season ever. That said, I don't think he would measure up to someone like Bottas. After four years, while not bad, he is clearly the #2 driver for a back-of-the-grid team, nothing more.

Possibly unfair to put two team mates into the same poll. If they're both shite, maybe it's the car that's at fault.
That said, thoughts:
Alex Albon - Hard to be in the clearly #2 car. He's certainly no Verstappen though.
Sebastian Vettel - Plonker.
Valtteri Bottas - Plonker.
Kimi Raikkönen - Shit car or driver? Who knows.
Antonio Giovanazzi - As above. But as a young driver he should now consistently be beating Kimi.
Kevin Magnussen - Shit car or driver? Who knows.
Romain Grosjean - As above... But he's a plonker .
Daniil Kvyat - Calling Robert Shwartzman... Robert Shwartzman? Your seat is ready. He'll probably go to Alfa though, sigh.
Nicolas Latifi - Unfair to judge as a rookie this soon... But he's a rich plonker who I envy.

Good point. Is someone underachieving if they're performing at their standard? I think Stroll is doing as well as he can. It's just that he's not that good.
Different question to ask who doesn't deserve their particular seat.

My vote goes to Kyvat. Gasly has smacked him quite badly this year especially in qualifying. Not sure he'll be sticking around at Alpha Tauri much longer.
Vettel - A close contender to Kyvat for most underperforming driver for well known reasons. On the other hand he's had a couple of respectable performances (Hungary, Spain) which is the only reason I didn't vote for him.
Grosjean - He's not doing terribly but after 9 full seasons of never doing anything incredible he's the driver who I would be the least sad to see leave the championship.
Bottas - For me the most frustrating driver on the grid at the moment. I just wish he'd challenge Lewis more. I think he's probably better then half the grid but I'm not sure he's really deserving of being in the top team in the championship anymore. Or maybe the team is focusing on Lewis and making him look a bit mediocre.
Albon - Verstappen is definitely doing a lot better then he is but you have to remember he's only in his 2nd season in the championship. I'm not sure he should have been brought out of Alpha Tauri last year.
Giovanazzi - Neither here nor there. I think he's about level with Kimi, which is not excellent when you consider how old Kimi is. I can't see him ever getting a drive in a better team.
Raikkönen - He was definitely a bit over the hill at Ferrari but he's doing OK at Alfa. I wouldn't be upset if he decided to continue past this year but I doubt he will.
Magnussen - Slightly better then Grosjean. Hard to say if he's really under-achieving given the car.
Latifi - He's been doing OK so far and he had a couple of decent F2 seasons. I don't think he'll ever be a excellent driver but I reckon he deserves a second season.

Agree.... his path to Ferrari as per Leclerc did has been thwarted by Ferrari signing Sainz, so I cant see the value of him as part of the Ferrari academy tbh. I know he is the listed Ferrari reserve but....theracer120 wrote: ↑3 years ago Giovanazzi - Neither here nor there. There are decent (Ferrari) academy drivers (ie Schwartzmann) in the F2 wings more likely / deserving to get a gig. Seeing as Gio is out of contract this year maybe Scwartzmann will be a possible in the Alfa seat occupied by Gio. Ferrari only get the say on one seat, so if Kimi retires as many see as likely maybe Hulk and Scwartzmann. Or should the cards fall Vettel's way to RP then Perez with the Mexican money would be a sensible alternative to Hulk?

The fact you used the word 'underachiever' rather than 'most disappointing' makes this more complicated than it should be.
Underachiever suggests they are capable of better and are underperforming/failing to achieve their potential.
Therefore, I think Kimi is doing just about as good as the Alfa will allow. Bottas is a disappointment, but he is not underachieving. We know he is not as good as the HAM. Grosjean is also a disappointment. I don't think Latifi could do any better either.
So that just leaves one driver who is underachieving. That's Seb Vettel.

Sainz has defintely underachieved this year, for various reasons.

Albon is doing OK in a team compared to a top driver with a car built around his style. The car last year was more suited to him and his performances were better.
Kivyat is doing as expected. Gasley is just better.
Grosjean and Magnussen are in a bad car and performing as they always have. Grosjean has flashes of speed and flashes of brain fade. Magnussen bullies the car around the circuit until the tires fall off and he falls back.
No one expected anything out of Latifi
Kimi is over performing for the car he is in. Giovinazzi is more a true reflection of the cars capability.
This leaves Bottas and Vettel. Bottas is not as close to Lewis as he had been the last two years despite winning the first race. Lewis is smashing him. Is that because Lewis has stepped it up a notch? Or is something is a bit off with Bottas 3.0? Perhaps a bit of both?
But the prize needs to go to Vettel for the most disappointing performance of the season so far. He is driving like he does not care. The Ferrari is bad this year, but LeClerc's performance is more around where the car should be finishing. Vettel is at least as good over a race distance as LeClerc (even though Charles may have flashes of more speed) but does not seem to be trying that hard. The fact that the points are 45 to 16 after 7 races shows how poorly he is doing this year. I've never seen a multiple world champ be so lost in a team as this. Not saying they have not been beaten before (Schumacher), but that has been only when the champ has been at the end of their career or in a "return from retirement". Vettel should not be at the end of his career yet, but he sure is acting like he wants that.
