Bottom post of the previous page:

F1 has predominantly not been about driving flat out. That period you describe was only temporary.

The tyres are only part of F1’s problems. Fix the tyres and there’s still the aero, the money, the gap between the teams, the circuits and what have you.

But it’s still a part that needs an overhaul.

That's what I like, a data driven argument. But I seem to recall the mid 2000s having various "full" fuel qualy rules going on did you take that and the refuelling ban into account?

I think he's saying that cars had to qualify with race fuel on board. Seems to ring a bell.

We did. In 2006 when the current format was introduced (no one-lap shootout in 2007!), but you had to start Q3 on your race fuel and then you got fuel back for every lap you drove. That was bizarre.

And in the one-lap shootout format 2003-2005 you had to qualify on race fuel! So they were at their slowest in qualifying actually. I think they removed the rule that you had to qualify with your race fuel onboard ahead of 2010. Might have been earlier though.

I don't remember this at all. Bizarre is the word

Absolutely true! And the GTP game was absolute chaos then. You had to calculate the time with the race fuel.

Plus I hated when they were doing the one lap shootouts (did not play GTP back then). It was so bizzarre when their single lap was slower than the race laps.

Yeah, that was a bizarre period of qualifying. It was all because they wouldn't go out in qualifying until the end of the hour, so you'd have 40 minutes of watching a blank track. Settling on the current format made the most sense in the end.

Went with a 6. Felt there was enough intensity, especially with Lewis having to survive X amount of laps on the softer tyre.
