2018 F1 standings with old points systems

I like this site, because it's very revealing: https://formula1.markwessel.com/simulat ... tor/2018/3

I calculated the 2018 standings using the old 1991-2002 system (points down to 6th). The two Mercedes, Red Bulls and Ferraris filled the top 6. The lowest placed driver of those was Daniel Riccairdo with 47 points. The next driver was Hulkenberg, scoring just 7 points for his one 5th place and a handful of 6th places.

I think it's a great way to see the gulf between the front 3 teams and the rest. Has it always been like this?

Not as much as this although obviously the top car of the year usually ended up on top, be it Ferrari, Williams McLaren Lotus or whatever.
Another major factor was that even the top cars were very prone to mechanical failure back then. As an example, Niki Lauda did 180 or so races in his career, and DNFd in 80 off them.

With top cars DNFing it let the underlings score points, in the days when with only six point paying positions available and grids of say 28....it really meant something for a backmarker to get into the points. Nowadays of course half the field get points with it being 10 points scorers from 20 starters. It has taken a lot of the achievement and in a way the honour out of point scoring.

I agree. I remember those occasions where a Minardi or an Arrows would creep into 5th or 6th place near the end of the race. It was magic! We don't have any true backmarker teams anymore though, so changing the points back to the old system wouldn't mean much.

Interestingly enough, using the Nascar points system, we got some real changes.

Lew would still win the title ahead of Vettel, but Vandoorne would finish 9th, Stroll would finish 10th, Ricciardo 11th, Ericsson 12th, Leclerc 16th and poor Grosjean would be all the way down in 19th.

Also, no matter which points system used, Hartley is dead last.

NASCAR points system really punishes the DNFs, Vandoorne and Stroll had less DNFs combined than Ricciardo alone :whistling:

Would have been cool to see the previous Nascar points system, where you'd get five points for knowing someone in the field, and 10 points for being someone's uncle, two points for having lumbago, etc etc etc.
