He isnt there for his ability, more for the PR exposure he generates. Cynically speaking he is there more for his disability and 'the story' than ability. Also Williams need the money he brings.

Finally got some time to post after some very tough days at work.
I'm surprised at how quickly the teams have already recouped the time differential between regs. I thought they would be 1.5-2 secs slower.
Merc have sandbagged a bit too ridiculously. Some critics maintain Ferrari are slightly ahead but I don't think so.
No idea who's ahead in the midfield. Alfa look reasonably strong.
RedBull appears to be further adrift in 3rd (as expected with the Honda) and closer to 4th than to 1st-2nd.

Testing at Bahrain on Tuesday was a bit of a washout, with rain falling, and Pirelli running out of wets!
Unexpected rain during today’s test in Bahrain meant teams were unable to to run for several hours as they had not brought any suitable tyres. None of the teams had selected wets or inters for the test. It was dry early so teams did get some running then.
Even when the track was dry, track conditions were much slower than they were during the race weekend. Verstappen’s best effort was 1.7 seconds slower than Charles Leclerc’s pole position.

It is forecast to be dry today, so they all should have plenty of dry tyres to do maximum running.
Unexpected rain during today’s test in Bahrain meant teams were unable to to run for several hours as they had not brought any suitable tyres. None of the teams had selected wets or inters for the test. It was dry early so teams did get some running then.
“The rain was a bit of a surprise,” admitted Mercedes’ chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin. “It wasn’t forecast but ended up costing us four or five hours of our programme.
“We selected the tyres for this test back in December and not expecting rain, we chose only dry tyres. So, once the track was properly wet we didn’t have any option but to wait for it to dry again.”
“It was a very frustrating day for everyone here in Bahrain,” added Williams’ senior race engineer Dave Robson. “Conditions first thing this morning looked reasonable following the dust clouds yesterday and some overnight rain.
“However, some further rain meant that little happened between mid-morning and early evening when conditions improved again. We were able to complete some aero testing early in the morning with George, concentrating on data gathering with the rake instrumentation. We then started a performance programme before the rain came.”
Even when the track was dry, track conditions were much slower than they were during the race weekend. Verstappen’s best effort was 1.7 seconds slower than Charles Leclerc’s pole position.

doesn't surprise me. I was in the Gulf last month, and had rain nearly every day. When it wasn't raining, it was regularly overcast and windy.

That Alonso guy doesn't look like he's got what it takes, way off of Norris' benchmark.

You have to take on board it is testing.... what tyres they run, what their role is, developing long run set ups etc. I notice Norris was shy of Alonso's pace on the final day of testing, despite having more laps. (But then their final test day was conducting tyre tests for Pirelli)DoubleFart wrote: ↑5 years ago That Alonso guy doesn't look like he's got what it takes, way off of Norris' benchmark.
FWIW Russell ended up fastest in the Mercedes.

Russel going back to the dumpster fire Williams after doing a full day in the Mercedes must be the F1 equivalent of...uh...I don't know. Moving back in with your parents when you're 35.
