Now back to the good times - what about the Mongols?

The campaign was heralded by the Battle of the Kalka River in May 1223, which resulted in a Mongol victory over the forces of several Rus' principalities. The Mongols nevertheless retreated. A full-scale invasion of Rus' by Batu Khan followed, from 1237 to 1242. The invasion was ended by the Mongol succession process upon the death of Ögedei Khan. All Rus' principalities were forced to submit to Mongol rule and became part of the Golden Horde empire, some of which lasted until 1480.

The invasion, facilitated by the beginning of the breakup of Kievan Rus' in the 13th century, had incalculable ramifications for the history of Eastern Europe, including the division of the East Slavic people into three separate nations: modern-day Russia, Ukraine and Belarus,[6] and the rise of the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

What about Russians in popular culture?

The ultimate movie villains.

Who is Russias greatest love machine?

Ah! Nice of you to ask. Meet the mad monk, Rasputin!

Image

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (21 January [O.S. 9 January] 1869 – 30 December [O.S. 17 December] 1916) was a Russian mystic and self-proclaimed holy man who befriended the family of Tsar Nicholas II, the last monarch of Russia, and gained considerable influence in late imperial Russia.

In late 1906, Rasputin began acting as a healer for the Tsar and his wife Alexandra's son Alexei, who suffered from hemophilia and was Nicholas' only heir (Tsarevitch). At court, he was a divisive figure, seen by some Russians as a mystic, visionary, and prophet, and by others as a religious charlatan. The high point of Rasputin's power was in 1915, when Nicholas II left St Petersburg to oversee Russian armies fighting World War I, increasing both Alexandra and Rasputin's influence. As Russian defeats in the war mounted, however, both Rasputin and Alexandra became increasingly unpopular. In the early morning of 30 December [O.S. 17 December] 1916, Rasputin was assassinated by a group of conservative noblemen who opposed his influence over Alexandra and the Tsar.

Rasputin was murdered during the early morning on 30 December [O.S. 17 December] 1916, at the home of Felix Yusupov. He died of three gunshot wounds, one of which was a close-range shot to his forehead. Beyond this, little is certain about his death, and the circumstances of his death have been the subject of considerable speculation. According to historian Douglas Smith, "what really happened at the Yusupov home on 17 December will never be known."

Got any more fun Russian stuff?

Oh, boy! Do I?!

Has it ever been a season highlight? I cant even remember who might have won in the past.
Edit: Just checked and apparently we have had 4 at Sochi

It seems like Max will start from the back with engine penalties.
Max Verstappen finished second for Red Bull in Singapore on Sunday but he can expect Formula One’s next race in Russia to be a hard slog from the rear of the field due to engine penalties.

Team principal Christian Horner said the Dutchman would likely switch to an older engine specification after a series of problems at the weekend.

“Sochi will be one to forget for us,” Horner told Sky Sports television. “I think we are probably going to be starting at the back. But then we’ve got some good ones coming up.”

He singled out Mexico, where Verstappen won last year, as a probable highlight among the six races remaining for a team who are switching to Honda power next season and look sure to finish third overall in 2018.

I went to Google with the intention of finding some Russian GP videos from the past few years, but was stopped in my tracks (excuse the pun) because of Google's auto-complete / prediction algorithm offering me some suggestions...

Image

...yes even Russian's have no interest in this race when the first most searched term is a gas mask

A dude who's dad once tried to ram a lady off the track at Snetterton which gave us one of the best Murray-isms ever.

Ah yes, that was a memorable Murray'ism as well as PalmFace moment.

Not to forget the same driver took out the championship leader at the penultimate race of the season, despite having been given explicit instructions by BMW (as had other BMW drivers) not to challenge or interfere with Will Hoy's race in order to protect him from Cleland and the Vauxhall team.

I have seen the Murrayism before (Hell hath no fury like a woman rammed) More memorable than anything else in either Palmers career.

Driver tyre choices for Sochi. Vettel goes aggressive

Seb has opted for a more aggressive tyre selection than Lewis for the upcoming Russian Grand Prix.
Seb has decided to take nine sets of hypersoft tyres to the Sochi event.

Lewis will have seven sets of Pirelli's softest compound at his disposal ( one more set of both softs and ultrasofts than Vettel.)

Max and DannyRic have opted for the same strategy as Vettel. Raikkonen has gone with eight sets of hypersofts.

Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz have the most aggressive selection with 10 sets of hypersofts.
