They should have at least shaved his head in public.
More steward inconsistency.

It's simple, the stewards seem to go lightly on Vettel and Hamilton, the championship contenders, to not spoil the championship.

The argument is that it was force majeure due to the confusion from the pitlane.

Sadly, another race that will be soon forgotten, it was dull as dishwater for the first 2/3 of the race, rain spiced it up at the end!

The trouble is, people don't like to see a race decided by a penalty, and so the stewards seem keen to stay out of it somewhat and let the chips fall where they may (Chips? Cards? Chips.) I'm probably on the side that likes this approach, but I'd rather they used it consistently through the field.

I think a reprimand is right. Wasn’t this rule introduced after Michael cut across from the track and right into the pitlane to stay in front of Ralf? That could be considered dangerous driving whereas this was a different circumstance.

I agree; I would much rather see stewards take a back seat and allow for more free-flowing racing, but like you say, it has to be applied equally to all and not just those fighting for the championship. Either be equally hard on all teams/drivers or equally lenient.

Rules are rules, and should be applied equally to all.

Except when some are more equal than others, of course.

This particular action directly gave him the lead.

Force majeure is this guy running up the pit entry and needing to swerve back onto the track to avoid him:

That's just making a call too late, after you've already committed, and benefitting from it. And it clearly worked for them.

Things have changed a lot since Hamilton lost the win at Spa for cutting the Bus Stop chicane and still giving the place back to Massa :whistling:

I agree with the decision here, this didn't warrant a 5 secs. penalty when the same have been applied for avoidable contact. It's not like Hamilton punted anyone for the win.

FIA tries to stay away from races & championship being decided on a penalty. Yeah, they bend the rulebook but it's their rulebook so they can decide when to ignore it

It's not like we can do anything about it. I'm tired of all this talk about the penalties. They're either too strict or too harsh. People will always complain about it. I prefer to focus on racing.

@Vassago I don't like penalties either. Rather none than a lot. But, like John Hindhaugh said once, motorsports is a team sport. When someone on the pitwall makes a mistake, the team makes a mistake. And the FIA should not pamper them or help them to get this mistake erased. This is going to be another pandora box.

We live in the era of technology. None of this would have happened 30 years ago without the radio communications. In NFL they don't know what a catch rule is anymore and sudden confusion is becoming standard in F1 too. Besides, post-race penalty would be absurd, even NASCAR reacts quicker to such pit-lane violations. If they couldn't decide on a penalty with 10 laps still remaining then it would make no sense to apply any post-race. It's not like they had to ask Hamilton what he was doing there. TV audience got it all clear during the coverage already.
