Miami to host race from 2019?

#1

Post by kals »

Autosport.com wrote:The city of Miami's local authority will vote next week on whether to push for a multi-year deal with Formula 1 that would begin with a street race in 2019.

A meeting of the Miami City Commission on Thursday, May 10 will include a discussion over a bid to bring F1 to Florida from 2019 to 2028.

If the vote is successful, the city manager will be tasked with formalising a contract between Miami and F1 bosses.

The push to discuss an F1 race is backed by Miami mayor Francis Suarez and three city commissioners.

Liberty Media has wanted to expand F1's presence in the United States since buying the commercial rights in late-2016, with a Miami race high up its wish list.

F1 commercial chief Sean Bratches said: "Earlier today the City of Miami Commission took an important step by adding an item to their upcoming agenda, that if approved, will make way to bring Formula 1 to downtown Miami next season.

"We appreciate the community's interest in hosting a Formula 1 race and look forward to working with local officials and stakeholders to bring this vision to life.

"Miami's status as one of the world's most iconic and glamourous cities, combined with its robust tourism infrastructure, makes Miami the perfect destination for Formula 1 and its fans."

F1's licensing arm submitted an application in November last year to the World Intellectual Property Organisation to trademark the "Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix" and the "Formula 1 Grand Prix of Miami".

That application, which is still listed as "pending" in WIPO's database, was followed by local reports claiming F1 representatives met with the city to discuss possible circuit designs.

The Grand Prix of Miami name was applied to various IndyCar and sportscar races, starting in the 1980s and ending only a few years ago.

Downtown Miami was then used to host a Formula E race during the electric single-seater series' inaugural season in March 2015.

It was not a successful event, largely thanks to the location - which has reportedly been targeted for any potential F1 race - presenting a significant logistical challenge.

FE had support of the city authority but the reality of hosting the race soured the relationship and Miami has not featured on the calendar since, although this is partly because FE negotiated a race in New York.

It has been suggested that F1 would make room on its 21-race calendar by dropping Azerbaijan.

However, Baku's promoter has denied he discussed selling the race's pit and paddock infrastructure to Miami organisers.

The Azerbaijan GP still has two years remaining on its initial contract, which can also be extended by another five years beyond its current 2020 end.

As much as I'd advocated moving away from places with doubtful human rights protocols, I'd much rather see Baku stay rather than a Miami GP. I love the madness.

Like who cares about human rights? Azerbaijan has enough oil money to bankroll their sporting dreams. Hosting World Cup in a desert like Qatar is another example that money always talks.

I'll believe it when I see it, New Jersey was supposed to host a Grand Prix, then it got postponed and then seemingly scrapped. The Grand Prix of America even had a provisional date on the calendar. So excuse me if I don't get excited about a potential race in Florida.

I have zero interest in seeing a race on a street circuit in Miami.
Do we really need a second US based GP? (Other than for Liberty's selfish reasons)
I thought there was a rule saying no to any 2nd National GP?

If the track is good - then great!

If it's utter rubbish as I am 99% certain it would be, then forget it.

Who's going to design the track? This seems a bit too late in the year already if they are to be ready for next season!

If the town council are preparing to vote I would assume that a track has already been defined.

Good point. Hopefully it is nothing to do with the track they used for Formula E a couple of years ago.

If it's a street track than they'll just put up some temporary pits an assorted structures.

Hard to say from that map.. depending on the length and width, elevation and aesthetics, it could be incredible or terrible. I'll reserve my judgement for now

Edit, judging from Google maps the straights would be just over a km each. I do like the not quite straight straights, I must say

I don't know if this is a joke or whether this is for real. Two straights in exact succession? What's the point? Probably will be nice to have given the lack of variety in modern Tilke tracks but this isn't exactly the old Hockenheim either!

Re: logistics - I can imagine that they would be able to sort out some temporary structures pretty quickly but with all the standards around how the pits need to be fashioned and all the rest, I still think it's a tight call to have everything sorted out for 2019.

Two straights back to back is trademark tilke, nothing new about that. And to be fair, old Hockenheim had four back I back :D
