Bottom post of the previous page:

Two things about Stroll calming down:

a) He knows the car is trash and Sirotkin provides little real competition.
b) He knows his father is about to purchase another team so there's no need for any heroics at Williams anymore.

Let's see what happens when he overdrives the car to keep up with Perez next year. Any bets Stroll will keep blowing it more often than this season?

Well Ocon has been officially named Mercedes Reserve driver for 2019. No surprises there,

But Bottas rather naively claimed he is not worried about his position for 2020.... :dunno: :whistling:

John wrote: 5 years ago As for Sirotkin, I felt he did more to deserve a seat in F1 this year than Stroll did.
Sirotkin deserves more out of 2018 than he's achieved, whereas Stroll deserves less criticism nee abuse than he receives. Both have done far better than their results suggest.
At least over here at TFL, there hasn't been much Stroll criticism anymore. I think everyone's just come to accept that, like it or not, he's here to stay because of daddy's dime. But he has massively calmed down after the first third of 2017 (when he was binning it every five minutes). The problem is, he's just not that fast. But he's not embarrassingly slow either (I think the Williams is mostly to blame for that!).
The thing is, outside of his testing mishaps in early 2017, he really didn't do much wrong in 2017. There was the brake failure in Australia, the 50/50 incident with Perez at China and then Sainz' brainfade in Bahrain. Hardly much to criticize him for.
He crashed at Monaco as well, IIRC. But otherwise I agree - after the first third of the season, he calmed down - and good on him for doing so. His broader speed is an issue, but he's not an embarrassment by any means.
Monaco was in FP yes and was his only true crash (of his own doing) since testing. The only other major incident I can remember of 2017 was the bizarre after the flag crash with Vettel.

But yes, totally agree that he’s good not great. Although far better than he’s ever been given credit for. Like @Vassago says, 2019 against Perez will be his biggest test.

Lance Stroll has said the announcement finally confirming his move to FI is hours away. He said he would be testing the car in Abu Dhabi at the post race testing that is scheduled.

Bottas really went out with a whimper in the desert. Put the fresh tires late and was still losing time to top 4 guys afterwards. Pathetic.

Bottas had brake issues. Plus when he and Max touched he sustained some floor damage.

Every driver who delivers a dud complains about floor damage sustained in the most minimal of contacts these days. That's just a wacky excuse in an era when telemetry can verify the old BS. I just don't buy into that at all.

Oh yeah, agree with you on the floor. Seems interesting how the teams spend all this money on aero development and when there’s a bump which causes damage it barely affects performance. Verstappen at Brazil is a good example.

But the brake issues was the main factor and once he’d had his second pit stop there was little to nothing to gain so he probably gave up.

Hartley had his year of fun, I don’t think he would get any better if he stayed another year. Also, I’ve never ever heard of Albon.

Are we really going to suffer another year of Stroll in F1?

I never rated Bottas. I think he’s below Kimi in terms of ranking the ‘Top 6’ of the top 3 teams.

More like another decade and a half unless Daddy goes bankrupt. Stroll will make people miss Maldonado even for the pure lulz.
