The Mongol invasion of Azerbaijan

The Mongol invasion of the Middle East and Caucasus was a devastating event for Azerbaijan and most of its neighbors. From 1220, Azerbaijan began to pay tributes to the Mongols. Jebe and Subotai Khan made the small state neutral. In 1231, the Mongols occupied most of Azerbaijan and killed the Khorezmshah Jalaladdin, who had overthrown the Atabeg dynasty. In 1235 the Mongols destroyed cities of Ganja, Shamkir, Tovuz, Shabran on their way to conquer Kievan Russia. By the 1236, all of Transcaucasia was in the hands of Ogedei khan.

Azerbaijan Gas fire

Azerbaijan is also known for it's gas fires of Yanar Dag.
Yanar Dag (Azerbaijani: Yanar Dağ, meaning "burning mountain") is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea near Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan (a country which itself is known as "the Land of Fire"). Flames jet into the air 3 metres (9.8 ft) from a thin, porous sandstone layer.[1][2] Administratively, Yanar Dag belongs to Absheron District of Azerbaijan.

Unlike mud volcanoes, the Yanar Dag flame burns fairly steadily, as it involves a steady seep of gas from the subsurface. It is claimed that the Yanar Dag flame was only noted when accidentally lit by a shepherd in the 1950s.[3] There is no seepage of mud or liquid, which distinguishes it from the nearby mud volcanoes of Lökbatan or Gobustan.

Borat

Finally - how to pronounce Azerbaijan

Man, the Mongols. They were pretty adept at doing what they were doing.

I thought Russia was the next GP, lol. Seems like it will be taking place in October again.

Good - the Mongol horde needs to rest and re-supply before taking on the rest of the eastern bloc.

Nice GP race weekend titles. Gives me a good laugh.

Turkmenistan also has a perpetual gas crater. Similarly a country that loves to spend/waste a lot of money on ostentatious things. Perhaps not too long before we see a GP there too.

Oh jeez, then what will people make of Silverstone when they realise it's a women's leg akimbo?

I dunno who the hell Akimbo is but I don't think we should be objectifying her leg.
