Gordon Murray awarded a CBE

Murray famed for his classic and innovative design work initially at Brabham before moving on to McLaren in a number of roles from within the F1 team to designing and overseeing the first McLaren Road car, the iconic 3 seater F1, and its Le Mans winning derivatives.

He has been recognised with the award ofCommander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 Queen's New Year Honours.
The legendary designer's accolade is in recognition of his 'services to motoring' - rewarding his lifetime's work in the automotive sector as well as on the racetrack.

Certainly well deserved.
"It is extremely humbling to receive a CBE in the Queen's New Year Honours," said Murray, 72.

"I've spent more than 50 years doing what I love, working with a wealth of highly-talented and creative people around the world, but primarily in the UK.

"From competing during the heyday of Formula 1, to designing the world's fastest supercar, I've loved every minute.

"I'd like to dedicate this honour to all those I've worked with over the years and I look forward to an exciting new future for the Gordon Murray Group."

Having designed his first car in 1967, South African Murray moved to the UK in 1969 to join the Brabham F1 team.

He later became its technical director, winning two drivers' world championships (1981 and 1983) and also became world-renowned for his innovations such as the 1978 BT46B 'fan car'.

He then moved to McLaren as technical director ahead of a period when the team won three consecutive championships from 1988 to 1990.

Having accrued 50 wins, Murray went on to establish a new company - McLaren Cars - which began with the McLaren F1 road car.

The 'GTR' racing version won two world-level sportscar championships and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995.

Murray guided several other successful projects at McLaren Cars, culminating with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren programme.

In 2005, Murray formed a new British company for the design, engineering, prototyping and development of vehicles - Gordon Murray Design Limited.

The Surrey-based company has a global reputation as one of the finest automotive design teams and is now responsible for an innovative and disruptive manufacturing technology called iStream.
FWIW famed collector and user of Historic Racing cars, Pink Flyd drummer, Nick Mason has also been awarded a CBE. (for services to Music)

Hmmm, seems a strange one. Happy for Pascal though.... maybe he will come back to F1 like Kvyat, the previous Ferrari simulator bitch.

Max Verstappen serves day 1 of his 'community service' order following the incident at Brazil with Ocon.
Max Verstappen has completed the first of his two days of FIA-enforced public service by observing the work of stewards at the Marrakech Formula E race.

Verstappen was handed the punishment after his physical altercation with Esteban Ocon at last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix, although the exact nature of his public service had not been determined at the time.

“It’s interesting to see it from the other side – normally you can’t spend an entire day with the stewards!” said the Dutchman in an FIA statement.

“Everybody does their own job during the weekend, and it’s good to really see what it takes to make these important decisions – sometimes a decision might not be nice for a certain person but it has to be taken and you have to follow the rules.

“I think it’s good to experience different things in racing rather than just sitting in the car – to be here and do this kind of work has been a constructive thing for me.”
Whether he means what he said or it was an FIA supplied statement I dont know, but he says he enjoyed his day watching Formula E! :dunno:
Verstappen had positive words for the all-electric championship.

“I’ve of course followed Formula E a bit on TV but I’ve never been in the paddock, and I really enjoyed the day,” he said.

“First of all it was a really exciting race.

“The championship is clearly growing and there are a lot of manufacturers here, so I think it’s a cool series.”

perhaps we could change the title of the topic to simply 2019?

I wish we had Kyalami back on the calendar. Not so much for the track (version up until '85 was legendary, this one is meh), but for the fact of having a Grand Prix in Africa.

Why? We run the risk then of anything to do with F1 being posted here, when clearly some issues are more important and warrant their own thread. This is, as it says, for lesser important passing issues that dont really warrant an exclusive thread that may only generate one or two replies, if any. My opinion.
