The 19th & LAST Alex Yoong GP of Malaysia (+ Gasly replaces Kvyat)
So, we head to Sepang for the last time. In 2016 Lewis saw his championship hopes go up in smoke. I can't help feeling that we need something similar to happen if we're to put some (Gordon) Spice into the championship battle this year.
Anyway, by the numbers:
Edit: Apparently the F1-site has stopped hotlinking to their images. So their comprehensive review is instead available here: https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/feat ... -know.html

Toro Rosso says Njet to Kvyat, says Mais oui, Pierre to Gasly and replaces the Russian for the remainder of the season.

Remainder of the season? I'm not sure that's right. From the articles I've read so far, Gasly is driving at Sepang and Suzuka only. Austin clashes with the final race of the Super Formula season.John wrote: ↑6 years ago Toro Rosso says Njet to Kvyat, says Mais oui, Pierre to Gasly and replaces the Russian for the remainder of the season.

Depending on how badly Gasly wants that title, though. If he has a deal done for 2018, he might skip the last SF race to get some time at COTA instead. Pure speculation, on my side of course.kals wrote: ↑6 years agoRemainder of the season? I'm not sure that's right. From the articles I've read so far, Gasly is driving at Sepang and Suzuka only. Kvyat has had his shot, he has failed, being comprehensively beaten by Sainz, and was unceremoniously deposed by Verstappen at Red Bull. Not being able to see out his contract has to be considered the final kick in the teeth.

I don't think the Kvyat situation looks like that. Kvyat will likely have a Toro Rosso seat in 2018, with Gasly being his team mate. Red Bull want to see Gasly in action in F1 as they evaluate his expected promotion into F1 for 2018. However they cannot offload Sainz to Renault early as Palmer is holding out on his contract. Renault must pay Palmer to leave. Sainz also won't be rested by Red Bull as he's doing very well.

Guess, we'll have to agree to disagree, I don't think that Kvyat is going anywhere in the sport, ever since being demoted from Red Bull, he has done nothing but go backward in what has to be considered a decent car.

I'm with the Wichita..nian (?) here!
Kvyat has been comprehensively smashed by Sainz this year, whom I, to be honest, don't rate too highly. He has T W O points finishes all year, which is, well, too few. Matsushita seems to be a popular option at Toro Rosso, according to some of the journous.

The only thing we're disagreeing on is Kvyat in 2018. My understanding is that he'll still be with STR, but I totally agree that since his demotion from RBR he's flattered to deceive.myownalias wrote: ↑6 years ago Guess, we'll have to agree to disagree, I don't think that Kvyat is going anywhere in the sport, ever since being demoted from Red Bull, he has done nothing but go backward in what has to be considered a decent car.

Matsushita would be purely a Honda PR exercise. To be fair, you should be bugging the journos about your favourite home boyJohn wrote: ↑6 years ago I'm with the Wichita..nian (?) here!

First time since Abu Dhabi 2009 there will be no Russian in F1
I hope the backers of Kvyat can Putin some effort before they see his 2018 seat russian' away.
It would be a terrible crimea not to see him in F1. Hope they can can sort some things about before the talks are stalin'. If necessary, Daniel moscow to a junior series again, or to WEC.
Lets face it though, most of the mechanical kremlins were on Kvyats car, not Sainz's.

Sainz smashed Kvyat. Simply because Kvyat never got over his demotion. The guy has talent, but he put his energy in too many things that had nothing to do with recovering his career.Antonov wrote: ↑6 years ago First time since Abu Dhabi 2009 there will be no Russian in F1

How many Russians actually drove F1? Not many.
