Sainz to replace Palmer at Renault from US GP
Rumours are circulating that Abiteboul is negotiating with Markko to release Sainz from his Red Bull contract so that he can replace Palmer from Hungary. Apparently Renault would need to pay Red Bull some 8M euros to get Sainz out of his Red Bull contract, but I suppose they could work something out with the power unit supply like Williams and Mercedes did in exchange for Bottas before the start of this season.
More news when and if it comes...
I hope this turns out to be true.

Red Bull Racing has reportedly severed ties with its driver, Carlos Sainz Jr, and the Spaniard is no longer involved in the future of the Austrian team. This is according Germany's Auto Bild after Sainz has criticized Red Bull and Toro Rosso in recent weeks in a number of different interviews.
With Red Bull reportedly severing connections with Sainz, the team will let the driver move to Renault, despite holding a contract with Toro Rosso for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Currently, Renault's Managing Director, Cyril Abiteboul, and Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko are negotiating a deal to get Sainz out of his Toro Rosso contract, although the Enstone-based team would have to raise an expected $8 million.
If Renault are able to raise this amount of money, Sainz would replace Jolyon Palmer at Renault for the Hungarian Grand Prix to partner Nico Hulkenberg, while Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly would replace Sainz at Toro Rosso.
"If a driver does not want to stay, if the love is extinguished, you can not force a contract with contracts, you should let go," said Red Bull CEO Dietrich Mateschitz when talking to Auto Bild at the Austrian Grand Prix last week.

Thanks for finding and posting that article erwin. What happened over the Austrian weekend between Sainz, Markko and Horner was plain weird. Last weekend the rumour was that the negative PR created between the three parties was in some way connected to Verstappen's rumoured move to Ferrari for 2018.

WHAT KIND OF CAR CAN RENAULT OFFER SAINZ?

The lad has a point ^
At least Sainz has Red Bull to step into should VER or RIC move on. At Renault he has nowhere else to go. Look at Hulkenburg!

What do you mean by look at Hulkenburg? He's been doing great this year and he's showing what is capable with the car is improving.
This is a works team that is rebuilding and while short term there will be struggles, long term the team has a lot of potential.

Short term (1-2 more years), yes, the car probably won't be winning championships. Maybe in 2019 they might be in a position to win races. Maybe. Could be worth a punt.
At the end of the day, only two or four drivers on the grid at any given time are in any position to win the championship. RBR are currently out of it. Ferrari were out of it for a while. Merc were out of it for a while. McLaren have been out of it for ages but with a proper engine could be up there. My point is, if he moves to RBR, or Ferrari, he might end up in the midfield as well. Things change, Renault might end up being an amazing move. Or not. Always a risk.

Read into this what you will.
Autosport.com wrote:Renault Formula 1 boss Cyril Abiteboul felt compelled to tell Jolyon Palmer his future with the team was safe ahead of the British Grand Prix on Sunday following media speculation.
Rumours emerged ahead of the Silverstone race that Palmer, who has yet to score a point in 2017, was set to be replaced by Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr for the Hungarian GP later this month.
But Abiteboul said he personally assured the Briton before the race that speculation about him being replaced for Budapest was not true.
"I have completely dismissed speculation of him being replaced in Budapest," he told Autosport.
"It's not good, particularly on Sunday morning.
"When I found out the proportion it had taken on the media side I made it clear to everyone that there was absolutely nothing true in that, and I told that to Jo directly.
"I wanted to clear that off his mind before the start."
Palmer qualified 11th for his home race, but he had to park his car on the formation lap after a leak caused a loss of hydraulic pressure.
His team-mate Nico Hulkenberg went on to finish sixth, matching Renault's best result of the season.
"We are extremely sorry and frustrated for Jo," Abiteboul said.
"I'm sure that with all that happened today, and looking at the pace of Nico, he would have had the capacity to be in the points.
"So extremely sorry, and all our apologies. It was definitely not a good moment.
"He knows that he has our support, and our commitment.
"It's a big disappointment what happened to him, because he was feeling very well in the car, and in the team, and his confidence is rebuilding. But he has to have the hardware."
Asked what can be done to raise Palmer's spirits, he said: "The potential of the team, and the potential of the car, is there.
"And that is the easiest way to rebuild confidence and motivation.
"Even though it has been two tough back-to-backs we would race tomorrow given the prospects that we have today.
"Our first priority is to get our act together on reliability, in particular on his side."

The cynical side of me says Sainz has asked Renault for a few extra days to come up with the 8m termination funds to secure the seat... JP will be out by the summer break.

I can think of plenty of reasons why it's stupid to change to Renault for the Hungarian GP
Renault only had upgraded parts for one car at Silverstone.
Sainz will have had less than a week to get to know the car.
Up against a well regarded driver in Hulk who has been driving it all year.
There is a four week break after Hungary where Sainz can spend the month in the simulator.

Part of me, a small part, feels a bit sorry for Parmer, it's not like he has had reliable equipment in which to prove us doubters wrong. Renault seem to be doing as much to make him look bad as he is himself.
I guess it can't be nice knowing you're only in the team because your dad has a good lawyer since the other sitting tenant was evicted the day the new owners took over and they pretty much said if they could have, they'd have done the same with you.

Like I said in another thread, when the equipment isn't failing Palmer, he isn't performing. And when he isn't performing, Palmer makes excuses. No part of me feels sorry for him as he's spent his entire post GP2 career talking himself up on the back of buying that GP2 title. Yes he's got equipment that is one step behind his team mate, but he knew that from the beginning and accepted those terms. If he'd done something with the drive I'd cut him some slack but all he's done in 18 months is continually try to justify his existence in F1 verbally and nothing else.

Very true.
Look, yes he's been rather unlucky. And having a lot less time in the car can't help him with the car and having pace.
But honestly, he's that far off, 95% of the time, that there's no real excuse.
Apart from the strong wind. And hacking.
