A "Motorsports Statistics" Area.

If you visit the "Racing History" section you will have noticed we have threads popping up about "Team Mate Accidents" and "Off on the warm up lap" and then in other sections we have Jesper's Non-racing related Fatalities and i had the thought "Why dont we have a statistics area?"

I just spoke to PT about it, and he had a few thoughts on it aswell and would like to know:

Do you think it'd be better to compile the info on the main website or give it it's own section? (See Poll)

I dont think any websites have statistics like this as they are a bit specialist, so it could help set us apart from the other "not to be named" forums

I have put the poll length to 14 days, so you have 2 weeks to make up your minds and vote!

Warren, read the first post in this thread:

See there's a list? DoubleFart is talking about moving all threads like that into it's own section. My modification of that idea was just to have them as an extra feature on the main Fastlane website.

That's quite a significant thing to compile, & I can't see people having the motivation to see it through. I'm looking at the side of it that'd be with alot of detail, & something in that region would take over 1month to compile complete statistics.

I can see the good intention behind it, but it's really not worth the effort. There are several sights & forums that already have this, & it'd be better off to have a link going to them.

I would like to see it as a prt of the Racing History section. But I agree that it will take quite a lot of time to compile.

To be blunt that thread isn't so much a statistic as it is an interesting record of events that dont happen every GP,.... in other wwords pretty much what many threads cover that are not current news. Statistics are quantitave orientated info than that Defining what is statistics and what isnt would probably cause more confusion, and we would end up with threads in there that dont qualify or merit inclusion because they are not stats in the rea;l sense of the word.

To me statistics in terms of motor racing are more results orientated, and refer to something that happens at all race meetings, ie winners, podiums dnf, pole fastest lap, and can include other more say driver related issues suxh as wins over starts, points average per GP, total races, most races without a win, consecutive podiums, consecutive accident dnf's etc. There are already a plethora of sites which specifically and exclusively cater for those needs, and more to the point most people get used to using one or two sites that they can navigate easily to get the info they want. To warrant getting into that sort of infomation related stuff needs to be done with consistency for it to be understood, meaning that it wouldnt really be the sort of thread that could be added to by the general membership, but becomes a lot of work for a small number of people who will present the info with a consistent look.

Re a stats thread or section as aabove I have to ask what can we do to present that sort of information better than dedicated stats sites, and perhaps more to the point to what benefit will it give the overall membership. Those with an interest in the statistical aspects of racing tend to be more 'anorak' like and use particular sites because they trust the information to be correct, a reputation a site doesn't gain overnight. The way we have the threads running now allows for general comment and will generally contain some relevant statistical info that fits in with the context in an informative way, and may spark more discussion from others by virtue of adding to or proving a point.

Then of course we have the various trivia threads that seem to be popular to many of the members. Generally they cover a range of statistically orientated miscellaneous information, which sounds like what trivia is.

I guess from my point of view I dont see how it will be a benefit to the general membership here, who basically dont visit (My opinion only) the site for a formal statistical overview so much as a general overview od general news and information covering a spread of anything to do with two/four + wheeled sport a number of other less formal issues. However I can see the merits of say an information wanted type of general thread from members who may be seeking speific help relating to issuesthey cant finf information on, the sort of my mate says such and such and I think something different, can anyone tell me the real reason.

Maybe I am missing the point..... :dunno:
