On Lap 128, a three-car battle between Lake Speed (#83), Greg Sacks (#48), and Jim Sauter came unglued when Sauter clipped Speed from behind coming into Turn 1. Speed lost control, sending him and Greg Sacks into the Turn 1 wall. The high-speed impact put a six foot hole in the boiler plate wall and sent Sacks barrel-rolling multiple times. Despite taking the brunt of the damage, Sacks walked away uninjured; the flips dissipating most of the impact. Speed was not as lucky, suffering a broken shoulder that would sideline him for 5 races.
