During the second week of the attempt, at 04h40 of Friday, 16 February 1973, the Ford Escort 1100 driven by David William Bartropp went off the road at a speed of about 150 km/h, on the straight before the Parabolica bend. It is possible, albeit not confirmed that the driver was not wearing a safety belt while driving. He was thrown off the car through the windscreen and died when being transported to Monza hospital.
